I do so all the time, even though many say its not good to do so. Haven't had a problem ever. I also don't wear an anti-static wristband when I tinker inside my computer. I like to walk on the wild side!

Hahaha not, not that extreme. I did used to use a magnetic-tipped screwdriver for tinkering inside a few computers. I finally stopped using it after I bought a non-magnetic tipped screwdriver. Only reason I used it is because its the only one I had my first few weeks at college.

WILD THANG! dun dun, dun, dun. YOU MAKE MY HEART SING!

I still use a magnetic screwdriver, it's the only way to go!

I've done it before, but only when I was in a rush. I'd shut down the computer just in case. Nothing will make you feel like a moron better than telling someone that you fried your motherboard by unplugging the mouse.

if you dont go magnetic, screws fall behind your mobo and short stuff out :Q actually dont listen to me, magnets dont sound too good for computers. i dont think theres anything wrong with hot swapping a ps2 mouse, just try it on a school computer

I've used magnetic tipped screwdrivers too. Is the magnetic field so strong that they can actually damage a HD or other component?

Been using a magnetic screwdriver as well for the past 7 years or so in and out of computers, haven't had a problem. I do take care to keep them away from the HD and mounted chipsets however. I have lost a couple of floppy disks before from accidentally putting the screwdriver near the floppies so definitely keep those magnetic screwdrivers away from floppies.

As a rule of thumb the PS/2 ports I always shut down my computer before unplugging/plugging things into. Everything else I hot swap as needed.

I once tried to hot swap an IDE drive.
When I pulled the power cable, there were sparks coming out, it was dangerous.

I think people are being too cautious about computer.

I wouldn't hot-swap a PS/2 based device.

I always use a magnetic screwdriver though I now always switch my machine off when working inside it (after a pretty nasty finger meets high-speed fan incident).

Same here! I have hotswapped many PS/2 devices, never had a problem. I don't think many home-users know that they shouldn't hot swap PS/2 devices either.

I do, and I use a magnetic screwdriver....only problem I ever had was with a usb 1.1 that I was trying to plug in with comp on!!!!! sent some static into, and messed up, the BIOS. Took a recovery BIOS burn to get it back. And I use a static wrist strap with inserting/pulling chips....I'm real carefull with cards and don't use a strap.

Depends on the motherboard. I hot swapped a ps2 mouse on a pc chips board and killed it. I've hot swapped on ASUS, Abit, and Bio-Star with no problems. I don't think it's good practice though.

I use a magnetic-tipped screwdriver all the time, except when I don't have it, then I use my leatherman.

I will hot swap PS2 devices, USB connections, video connections (though I will turn off the monitor first) and most of the time it is not a problem. I fried a monitor this way one time at work, but at worst I might have to reboot the computer.
I will not work on the inside of a computer with it running. I've seen people do that and really fry some components. Don't you love when you walk into a room and the Director of Engineering for your company is pulling PCI cards out of a running system. Arggg...

The one time I hot-swapped a PS/2 device (mouse), I killed the port on the motherboard. No more PS/2 hot swapping for me.

This is a reason that I use USB Mice now, because you are moving them so much that occasionally the mouse can get pulled out of it's socket. Better safe than sorry.

Are you really in so much of a hurry that you would risk your mobo instead of turning it off to swap devices that are not buffered properly for hot-swapping?

And the only thing a strong magnet tip on a screwdriver can harm is a floppy (not the drive) or a monitor if set too close for too long it might leave a permanent discoloration on the screen (unless you have a strong enough deqausser).
