I'd jump ship. Why should I give my life for a bunch of people who wouldn't do it for me?

First of all, that's the job description. Cowards need not apply.

Secondly, it's more than just a matter of decency, it's the law. He's going to be dealt with for his craven selfish behavior.

I don't believe it. Nobody gets a Master's License and the command of a half-billion dollar passenger vessel without many, many years of deck officer experience. It might be the toughest profession in the world to get into, after Starship Captain.

His sister Giulia told the Naples daily Il Mattino: "[Francesco] loves the sea. He has always worked as an officer. He has a long career behind him."

She said he had begun his career with the ferry company Tirrenia, then worked for the petroleum group Agip before joining Carnival, the US-based firm whose stable of distinguished brands includes P&O, Cunard and Holland America.

Schettino joined its Mediterranean cruises arm, Costa, in 2002. After a spell as a second-in-command he was promoted to the rank of captain and in 2006 his career reached a new peak when he was handed command of the newly launched, 114,500-tonne Costa Concordia.

Un-fucking-believable! All over a needless and pathetic display of bravado to boot.

This pathetic excuse of a man and captain needs to be taken to a sister ship and KEEL HAULED!

Ya know... he probably knew that his career was done for the moment his ship hit those rocks. At that point, I'm surprised that he didn't run for the hills.

Yep, surprised he even showed up to reply to the coast guard. Should've disappeared and remained missing if he was going to run off like a coward.

What shocks me is the apparent failure of any of the high ranking officers to step up. Usually you get a few worthy officers getting shit done even when everything is falling apart around them. To me this indicates a systemic failure to elect quality individuals to upper positions. Though I suppose it could just be the media latching on to the most sensational portion of the story thus far.

As for the captain... Life over, man. Life over.

Sure his career was gone, but he could have come out of it as a decent human being if he would have stayed on that ship until every living passenger had gotten off.

It was reported in one paper that the Captain had been seen with a beautfiul woman on his arm in the ship's bar, as the ship was heading for the rocks.

I can't help thinking he was taking a lead from his former President's behaviour with respect to the Italian economy.

The question on the subject and the poll are two different things. Very annoying post.

How to be a douche captain:

looks at map. sees large rocks.
"Let's go that way!"
slams into giant rocks
does nothing for 30 minutes, then gives an announcement saying that everything is ok
abandon ship, letting people on board die
blame it all on the map.

Well said. But I still don't understand one thing; if the captain was doing some type of stunt manoevre to get as close to the shore as possible in order for the head waiter to wave to his family (!), well, wtf was the head waiter doing in the control room? And why would the captain agree to do this? Something smells fishy...and now those poor missing people are fish food.

B/c you're a troll and a coward. Heck, aren't you afraid of the neighborhood kids?

Neighborhood kids love to kill for no reason. That's pretty scary. Murder in my square quarter mile alone amounts to more than the rest of the city combined.

I'm more afraid that I will spend the rest of my life in jail for killing one of them before they kill me.

Fitting that a troll lives in the ghetto.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/t...ster-Captain-ordered-dinner-as-ship-sank.html

Yep, ordered his dinner after the ship hit the rocks to be with his lady friend.

Amazing. It's like the Capt was a Bush appointee!

I keep dwelling on the same thing the more I think about this: I can see a worthless chickenshit like this guy panicking and shirking his duty in a storm, miles offshore, where rescue may be in doubt.

But when the ship is resting on a reef roughly 150 meters from shore? Are you fuckin kidding me?
