the fact that this is even a question makes me sad.

20 years ago nobody would've questioned letting their 11 year old ride a bike 1.5 miles. What is that, a 5 minute bike ride?

Well that's kind of the point, 20 years ago was a different time, though where you live has a big impact on it.

The times are not different. People are just paranoid these days. Germs were there 30 years ago but today I see full grown adults washing their hands for 3 minutes out of paranoia.

1.5 miles near heavy traffic is totally dif than 1.5 through some rural area. Sounds like you live in a suburban area where he'd mostly be riding on side streets, so it's probably fine. When I was around... the 12-13 age is when my mom started letting me ride my bike pretty much anywhere.

If he's got the cell phone, he can just call in case there's an emergency. As long as he's not an idiot, he should be okay (and as long as he just says no to STRANGER DANGER!!!).

When I was 8 I used to get on the bike and be gone all day and rode farther than most people drive to get really good sushi.

I feel sorry for america. Parents only want schools to act like daycare for them, they coddle and shield kids and then wonder why they cant deal with anything.

Real life is gonna be such a shock for them.

this.

when I was four I went to a forest kindergarten where us kids would just run wild in the woods with minimal adult supervision. When I was 11 I'd make the 13 mile journey to the country club, where I played golf every Tuesday and Thursday, on my bike.

I would even let a little baby crawl alone to the store. Why not?

It's good for his/her independence!

The only problem I see is the riding on the sidewalk.

That's where I drive.

How does that work exactly? The doors to your van are on the side; wouldn't it be more effective to drive in the street, that way you can lure nerds in from the sidewalk?

When I was still a fetus I used to pop out and ride my bike to the clubs on Saturday nights. Mom didn't care as long as I was back for ultrasounds on Monday morning.

This. There were roughly the same amount of child predators in the 80s as there are now (well, more now, but that is adjusted for population increase). The difference was you didn't see it on the news every single night.

Just got to thinking about my next door neighbors. Three kids from about 14 on down to about 8. I NEVER see them outside playing, riding a bike, walking the dog - whatever. I know they're there because I've chatted with the parents. Its a sad thing they have to be prisoners in their own homes in a sleepy Northern California town of 20,000.

I had a neighbor growing up who had the same kind of parents. He was homeschool and we literally didn't see him for like a year and a half once. He didn't move, wasn't sick, nothing. He just wasn't allowed to go outside. And, once he was allowed, he couldn't leave his small front yard.

I've assumed they are inside watching tv or playing xbox, not that they aren't allowed outside.

This was quite a while before WoW. It was a few years after that incident I became the first person I could find in my junior high school with high speed internet, and that was only because my step father worked for the cable company.

I felt sorry for the kid. We had quite a bit of fun raising hell around the neighborhood.

I don't think you are being unreasonable.

Here, my neighbor bought a small motorcycle for his 4 years old girl, complete with training wheels.

I think that's ridiculous and they will be sorry if she hurt herself.

that's insane 4? yeah.

but my 8 yr old rides a 50cc often and my 11 yr old rides quad's

i keep looking for a nice used 50cc and 100 cc for them.

kids get hurt climbing trees, riding bikes, playing tag. worrying over what if they get hurt is going to make being a parent no fun.

4 years old seems a bit unreasonable for a small motorcycle (assuming he mean something like a minibike, not a 50cc) without heavy adult supervision.

Even a small motorcycle can be fatal. Not that a pedal bike isn't, but hitting a tree pedaling is a lot different than 30mph on a dirt bike.

Yes, I'd let my kid ride that far at that age - younger even. And, as my kid grew up, he was aware that a lot of the other kids with helicopter parents grew up to be pretty helpless people.

So much this.

Kids need time to learn to be independent.

I was pretty much allowed to go anywhere my feet or pedals could take me by 11-12, much to the chagrin of many of my friends' parents at the time...
