would you move to a segregated community?

I would move into a community that only allowed inoffensive people who don't bother anyone in.

I would love to live in a community of atheists.

A community of racists...not so much.

So it depends.

Then I guess I win as I don?t live in any type of a ?de facto segregated community?.
I live in a neighborhood that has Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, etc? Born in the US and immigrants. House value goes from the 200k (low for area) to close to a million. And on and on?

That's not the god damn question though, now is it? The question was if you would WILLINGLY move into a segregated community.

Most people, when given the choice of where to live, will choose the nicest place that they can afford. So, I think that we generally do choose to live in a segregated community (i.e. of people of similar socio-economic class).

Not many people purposely choose to live in an area well below their socio-economic class.

(Of course, most of the people who respond to this post negatively will be the exception to the rule even though they think they are in the majority.)

I don't know or interact with any of my neighbors now, I dunno if that'd change in any community.

Would not be deciding factor either way really. I would move to the area that had everything I require (safety, convenience, etc.), regardless of who lives in the area and their racial/religious/sexual make-up.

No, but I wouldn't live where I was hated and persecuted either (if I were gay and lived in say, Temecula for example; or if I lived in a largely minority slum area).

I've been to Hillcrest, big gay community in San Diego, because I have a friend who lives there. He's not gay, it's just a nice community and close to where he works. I can see where a group of people who are largely ostracized from society would want to live together.

Depends. If it is one of those communities where I buy a house then they can tell me what color to paint it, how often I should cut my grass, or what I can do outside, then NO.

I'm not Chinese, but I lived in Chinatown in Boston for six months.

Could you please be more specific about what you're talking about?

this was the conflict i was having also. if it was a neighborhood that only allowed white people in, they wouldnt let me live there. good thing tho, id not want to live somewhere that possibly could lead to me kickin some biggot ass. i cant stand small minded people, and segregation of that type is just that. small minded.

while i often refer to my neighborhood as "little mexico", there are plenty of other races living in the area. there are more spanish signs than engrish, so thats why i posted how i did previously. if it was mandatory to be a mexican, id not live here (even tho i could)

heh-heh...We're considering selling our house and moving into a "55+ community."
NO kids allowed! (except for an occasional visit)

BUT, NOT a senior's nudist colony...<shudder>

My neighbors are Hispanic, Black, White, Asian and a couple of them are bi-racial couples. Oh, and we also have 1 lesbian couple. This is one street with 16 single family homes on it. We all have one thing in common, we all own our homes (well, there is one rental on our street-nice white couple with a daughter who is my son's age).

segregated by whatever factor... race, religion, interests/hobbies, etc.

a friend was trying to convince me tonight that moving to Asbury Park, NJ was a good idea. lol. the idea of living in a town with a huge active gay population has a definite appeal, but on the other hand, diversity is good and I can see it getting old fast (and, of course, the 1+ hour commute kills the idea no matter how much my friend wants a roommate made me wonder if I was the only one who found the idea of a segregated-ish community semi appealing, though)

Serious question, why is diversity good? It's PC, it's all the rage, but why?

Because people of like-mind and like-background only bring certain viewpoints to the table. As individuals and as a society we make better decisions when we are prompted to consider viewpoints that are not necessarily our own and take things into consideration that we would not have thought of on our own.

Racial diversity mixes up the gene pool and produces healthier kids over the long haul, just like mutts tend to be much healthier than purebreds in the dog world. (Anyone who thinks I'm insulting mixed-race children in that statement needs to get a life.)

I grew up in, and currently live in a pretty segregated community. It isnt due to race, it is due to economics. (Although this generally tends to divide races as well)
