Would you move to Hawaii?

Recently moved in with the gf. Both in our mid 20's with no kids. her parents have a second house, and also a townhome in Hawaii. They offered for us to live in the townhome and pay a lot less than what the place would normally cost. Problem would be, I wouldn't have a job there. My girlfriend has a job where she could still work there remotely for a business.

So, who would move. You'd be living in your girlfriend's parents furnished condo, they're in the main house (not the townhome we'd be in) for about 1/2 the year and live on the mainland.

Pick up... leave everything... sell the car (it costs a fortune to boat things down there)...

It makes me wonder if I'd be happy without a job, and what kind of job I'd get out there. the gf tries to convince me we could start a business. I think to myself... yeah right...

oh, and I hate my job here on the mainland... which is spurring the talk of moving there to begin with.

What island???

Hawaii is beautiful, but after a year or two you will want to come home.

A friend of mine just did that...quit her job in may...moved to hawaii with a hope and a prayer with a friend. They found a place ot live and are having a great time so far but things are costing a bit more than she expected (food wise...housing you can apparently come by cheap) and the work there is unlikely to make you much if anything. But she seems to really be enjoying every minute of it.

In your situation? Why not? You only live once, and not everyone gets to include Hawaii in their run

Malo aloha foola, whitey!

They don't like "mainlanders" there. They've even got a special name for white folk from the "lower 48." The USA really is the biggest contradiction of all; founded by immigrants...then became a union of like- minded people...which became an "us versus them" contradiction of bullshit.

The latter two annexes, Hawaii and Alaska are pretty opposite in value. Hawaii got us some real estate in the south pacific from which to spy on Asia and Russia, along with peoples of mixed race (Japan/Phillipines/China/Guam/Korea/insert SP island here. Alaska got us....a shitload of oil and a billion square miles of impossible beauty only visible thru the melting snow 1 month out of the year.

I guess annexing those other two states was a good idea...if we didn't, someone else would've.

BTW people; I don't make this up; I just tell it like it is without the pretty window dressing covering up the nastiness of reality.

That's my take on it. You're still young and flexible. If you don't go, I think you'll live to regret it.

If I were just out of college I probably would, but being late 20s and without having a job setup, I don't think so. I would never want to live off her parents dime either, but that may just be me, I have this thing about wanting to do everything on my own and not rely on others.

Do it. Esp since you hate your job anyway. Oppurtunities like this don't come very often. It might give you a chance to reboot your career.

Yeah, that's what's holding me back. I want to at least visit first, but my current boss sucks so much he won't grant me vacation time that I put in even though it's all the way in December. I may never be able to visit. Did I mention my job sucks? haha.

I probably won't go. Unless I lose my job... in which case... I'll probably want to go there asap, because finding a job in this economy is probably damn near impossible.

i'd definitely go check it out first, get a lay of the land, so to speak, before selling my car and up and moving somewhere.

Ive heard that if youre white, you'll likely experience racism/ discrimination.

I don't have firsthand experience, other than what people that lived there have told me.

YMMV, obviously.

When I was 19, I worked for a company that had a resort in Hawaii. They offered me a job there, to to fly me there and give me a place to stay for three months while I looked for a place to live. I didn't do it.
I still regret it to this day,

Yeah, I think getting over there to check things out first would be a very important step before making such a big move.

Actually....Hawaii is not far enough....I would leave the entire country (somewhere in Europe)

Under YOUR exact scenario? Probably not, but we've been trying to figure a way to do just that.

Before the housing market crashed here, we were planning to sell our house and use the equity as down payment on Hawaii.

With the parents on both sides being gone, WE really have no reason to stay here, I've traveled all over for my work over the years anyway, so uprooting and moving is no big deal for us.

So, in answer to the main question:
Topic Title: Would you move to Hawaii?
Topic Summary: Drop everything, all friends, items, JOB..

The answer is HELL YES!

Just so I have straight... you're giving up living on a tropical paradise scott free, where the only thing more beautiful than the island would be your girlfriend, a chance to meet new people, a chance to maybe find a new job and career, so that you can stay in a job you hate with a boss that doesn't give a shit about you?

If that's what you're willing to accept out of life then that's excactly what you deserve to get out of life. You're young, you have no children. If it doesn't work out you can always go do something else. But at least you can say you were willing to try something new and won't look back with regret.

In short, quit being such a pussy and go!

I did forget one possible problem though. If you got whozyerdaddy and I together on the same island...probably drinking a few cold beers...most likely the time-warp continuum would go into total meltdown and it'd be the end of life on Earth as we know it. the planet couldn't handle having ATOT's 2 Sexiest Men (2007 and 2008) together in the same place...BOOM!

What kind of a job do u have? Is it an actual career or just a random job?

Her parents sound pretty well off, you should lock her down and just live the life of a trophy husband
