sleep later. i worked from 6am - 2pm for 10 years and never got used to it. sure, you have a "whole day" to do stuff after work, but youre so tired you just want to relax. then you have to sleep by 9 when everyone else is still up and doing stuff.. and at 2 in the afternoon NOBODY has time to do anything anyway.

i hated it. last years i worked banker hours, 9am to 5pm. it was bliss. i felt like every day was a weekend.

Yes this x1000

I'm scheduled for 40 hours/week and I'm in the office for 40 hours/week and I'm generally working (even now while posting on ATOT, I'm just waiting on a process to complete on my second screen)... if there's a person out there who literally does 40 hours of work/week and doesn't devote a single minute to staring out the window, going to the bathroom, or taking a personal phone call, I'd love to find that sad SOB.

To work 40 hours a week one would have to be in the office more than 40 hours a week, after subtracting non work stuff it typically turns out to be about~43-45 hours a week in the office for 40 hours of work. Not a huge difference but all the same.

I wish you'd drop by my office and explain this to the parents who have to arrive at work late after dropping their kids off at school and then leave early to pick them up.

fortunately my company isn't a nitpicker

we don't have time cards... there are some weeks where I'm probably under 40 hours, and many others when I'm over. but it all evens out in the end.

Earlier would be nice due the horrible Bay Area traffic -

I currently work 8:45 - 6:30 daily and spend 40-more minutes a day telecommuting (checking emails & such) Fridays I either work from home or leave the office around 2:30pm.

4-day work week would be legendary!

Ugh. Don't remind me. Every time I'm out there I want to kill myself due to the traffic.

Last time I was out there I was going back and forth from San Fran to Silicon Valley a couple times a day for meetings. It was awful.

If Caltrain were faster I would use that but even the "Baby Bullet" takes quite a while.

the one good/bad thing about commuting via subway is that my commuting times are generally the same no matter what (baring subway problems). but going at off-peak hours means not having to jam myself into a sardine can; it's especially lovely to have to spend 20 minutes on the subway with some Indian guy's armpit in my face in the summer.

Since my wife gets up early to start teaching at 7:15am, I have adopted the schedule. While I would love to sleep in and come home later, I like to spend time with her and do whatever it takes. During the summer, I can sleep in a little more since she is off.

I've actually seen a couple commuters take aggressive exception to that. Something about wearing deodorant is not a cultural practice for a lot of them.

Well they're morons then. Deodorant isn't a cultural thing, it's about not stinking up the joint.

When an employee says this, you know they work less than 40. When management says this, you know they work more than 40.

Also, paid lunches is the only way it's 40. Most people don't get paid lunches.

There are upsides and downsides to both.

In early out early:
+ you avoid rush hour
+ you get out while it's still light even during wintertime
+ makes weekend getaway trips easy if you have to drive far on Friday
+ feels like you've accomplished a lot while the day is still young
+ quiet hours in the morning can be incredibly productive
+ feels like you have a lot of time since you head home early
- you don't really have THAT much time since you have to go to bed early
- since you have to go to bed early it's troublesome to hang out with everyone else in the evening time

Sleeping late going home late
+ can hang out with everyone else when it's late
+ good for people who can't head to bed on time
+ good for people who like to sleep in (since they can't get to bed on time)
- rush hour traffic
- often it feels like the day is dragging on and on and on...
- easy to get drawn into late day meetings/conversations/projects
- you basically never see sunlight during the wintertime

Eh... I used to be an owl, now I'm a morning person after being conditioned into it by years of work, and I like it that way. The only downside is I can't hang out late with people anymore, start feeling sleepy by 9-10pm.

I'm a fan of paid lunches, but I also eat at my desk while working (if anything, my lunch break is the 5 minutes it takes me to run across the street to a food truck)... I'm a slow eater, so it's kinda more comfortable for me to just pick at a dish over the course of an hour or two while working.

80% of the time, I work a 40 hour week... the +40/-40 breakdown is probably 15% over 40 hours and 5% under (the long weeks being the frequent result of having a ton of work to do, clients calling in while I'm trying to go home, getting called at home, etc... and the short weeks are the rare occasions that I've got a doctor's appointment or an engagement after work that I have to leave a little early for)

Pretty much this. Traffic in Pittsburgh is bad. The only shifts that allow me to avoid traffic is 7-3 or 11-7.

Ya, you should* still be awake the same number of hours no matter what time you start or finish. Stores and "fun" places open later on weekdays to accommodate "late" workers already. So, it turns into whether you want to be off work the same time most other people are (easier meet ups) and how much sun you want.

Another reason I hate working "early" is traffic, which has been discussed. I used to drive and traffic is complete shot between 7am and 9:30am. Now that I take the subway, the subway is a cattle car on both lines I take between 7:30am and 9:30am. In the afternoon, it's a cattle car on one line from 4pm to 7:30pm.

8-4 and 10-6 is still within commute hours. If I have to choose, I'd probably do the later shift because I'm a night person.

I work 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, with a half-hour commute each way. I like it because I'm a morning person.

I worked 2nd shift several years ago (3:30 pm - 12:00 midnight). I pulled it off but didn't like it. Too hard to unwind and get right to sleep after work, and I'd wake up early (5-6 am) regardless of going to bed late.
