Would you still get a FTW?

For years I always researched my computer builds. But since I was just upgrading my video card I seen about 3 reviews that all said most of the 1070 were all close to the same.

So I bought the EVGA 1070 FTW last night, only to find out today about this VRM fire issue. My bad for not spending days researching a purchase. But between amazon's return system and EVGA 's warranty I dont feel totally burned by my lack of looking

Is the thermal pad and bios update a good working fix? Or would you just send the card back and get a Asus Rog/ MSI?

Thanks for any input.

From what I've heard, EVGA has really good customer support, so you can easily register your 1070 FTW card to EVGA under warranty and have it shipped to them so they can install the new bios and thermal pads for you.

And according to this video, the new bios and thermal pads DO make a big difference in preventing your VRM's in your FTW card from overheating. So if your FTW card doesn't have the new bios and thermal pads already installed, I suggest to go ahead and do it.

It's easier to return it and get another 1070 from another manufacturer... not worth the effort of opening the cards and replacing VRMs or sending it to EVGA to do the exact same thing unless EVGA themselves are willing to partially reimburse you for the effort.

I got 15% off my EVGA GTX 1070 from Amazon for the trouble. So I end up paying only $309.99 for my card!

Cancel the order/return it. Life is too short (and valuable!) to mess around with tech that might catch fire.

If you bought your card yesterday there is a good chance you get one from the new batch, with factory installed thermal pads and BIOS update. If you want to be sure, you can go to EVGA quest RMA form, enter your cards S/N and according to EVGA that should tell you if you allready have the necessary fixes implemented. Every card shipped from EVGA since Nov 1st has had at least the BIOS update pre-installed. From Nov 5th EVGA has also confirmed that every new card will also have thermal pads installed effectively fixing the heating iisue alltogether while giving you the tools to maintain a silent card. You will simply have to tune the fan curve back towards the pre.crisis factory default. I feel since there will be thermal pads in every place there should have been from the get go, the BIOS update that might make the card more noisy is now just an overkill.

I paid the extra 2.99 to amazon for the overnight shipping so I will know today if it's had the fix pre applied by the factory. So I will know more today.

Thanks for all the great input guys.

Grab the ASUS card. Lower temps and very quiet HSF. Best 1070 in the USA IMO, since they all OC the same anyway. Don't get me wrong, I like EVGA, but they messed up and their solution is pretty half baked.

I'd return it and avoid the hassle of getting to install thermal pads and bios updates(these things can go bad and easily ruin your whole day). Get the Zotac APM version if its available.

Even if you got it for $309.99 because Amazon gave you 15% off for all the hassle ?

EVGA has great customer service and will stand by their cards. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

(Even if it were actually on fire at the time of purchase if the discount was good. )

It's coming out of fort worth to Omaha, Fedex overnight so it should be here around noon.

Think I am going to check the serial number and if it hasn't had the fix it will just go back to amazon. After reading some of these post I really agree with the idea that I spent $450.00 for a video card, I shouldn't be responsible to do anything to make work.
I have built my own water cooled computers for years so installing a thermal pad is no big deal. But why should I have to, and for free.

Asus Rog Strix

OR

MSI Gaming X ?

I only purchased my EVGA GTX 1070 about 25 days ago so still have time to return it to Amazon but I already got 15% off it so paid a total of $309.99 for it.

I think that was a really good deal. Would you keep it if you got it for that price ?

The only thing is I got to wait for EVGA to send me my brand new card first, sense it is cross shipping, and hope my current card doesn't die. Then switch them out. Which I really don't feel like doing. Either way I have to switch out the video card.

If I already had one I'd probably take their fixes and partial refunds. If not, I wouldn't consider one.

I wouldn't consider any EVGA Pascal card now. This will be a black mark on those cards' reputations even if it doesn't have any impact on longevity. Good luck ever selling it.

I'm hoping I can get a refund on my 1070 SC, but I purchased it in July so it's gonna be tough.

Same thing was said about the 970 after the memory configuration was exposed, yet that held its value until Pascal came out. I would know, I was watching prices to potentially go SLI.

So no, this will not hamper the ability to resell these cards. If it does, please let me know and I'll gladly pick one up at a discounted price.

They are not anywhere near the same and you know it. All 970s have the same memory configuration, someone looking for a 970 doesn't get to choose a different option. What do we get to choose from? Make and model. That is the issue here. This particular model has an issue, the smart move would be to stay away or ensure the used card was one manufactured after EVGA corrected the issue.

Adding the thermal pads takes 2 minutes. Easy. And they're sending the kits to anyone for free, no problem. In fact, they're sending them to people whose cards aren't even affected just for peace of mind. They'll even cross-ship RMA you a replacement card if you refuse to do the mod yourself. Can't think of any way they could handle it better. I'm inclined to believe that ASUS wouldn't even acknowledge the problem if it happened to them, let alone come up with a comprehensive plan to address customer concerns.

Exactly....most companies probably wouldn't even acknowledge the problem in the first place.
I've got 2 cards I need to 'fix'. Not worried about resale, I never usually resell my cards anyway.

Well got the card amazon. Had the old bios and no thermal pad.
So I think it is going back today and get the Asus Strix. Just disagree with EVGA's approach of here is your $450.00 card now please take it apart and add this pad before it burns up or crank up the fans, eliminating one of the best features (to me)of the 1070's.

IMO they should have pulled the cards sitting in the system (like amazon) and replace them with fixed cards. Not make those who find out about it deal with the hassles of their mistake.

If i could go back in time, I'd have gone with a different brand. very unhappy with my now very noisy 1080, that no longer uses gpu boost at all, but hey, the temps are lower.

I personally wouldn't ever touch evga brand. I understand they have some good products but I'd rather get a gigabyte g1 or an MSi card if it's Nvidia. I've never seen evga truly excel at anything so far.

100% agree with you. When I saw that I was mind boggled that evga thinks it's acceptable for such a product.
