Probably not.

My company got a temporary contract back in October and offered me the "opportunity" to take it on. HOPING this shit is ending next week, has been a bitch and I've not had a single day off call since October.

It came with a 17% pay increase, not worth it.

I think it depends just how miserable I'd be compared to how much money I'd actually take home. Does it bump you up a tax bracket? Do you have to move? Are there any hot women that you will potentially be working with?

From the time a person starts in school till the time a person retires.
168 hours in a week subtract apx. 1/3 (52) hours for sleep = 116 subtract apx. 60 hours for work or school including prep time and travel = 56 subtract apx. 2 hours per day for meals, meal prep and food gathering - 14 hours = apx. 40 hours for yourself and the people you care about.

So, I only get one fourth of my life to do what life is really for.

If anyone wants any of my 25% it is going to costs more than 15%.

I go to a job I don't like every day. Why wouldn't I take a raise?

Because for the OP the raise would be for a position he'd like even less than his current one. Considering what he indicated the raise would be, I'm guessing he's not especially hurting for more money.

When you get to a certain point in salary, money is far from everything.

Oh gotcha

Until I get a job as a cop, I'll always dislike my job. And I'll never get a job as a cop

Maybe... but considering 15% from what I make now is less than what my degree's market value is (engineer underemployed as tech - soon to be engineer with master's underemployed as tech...), it's not much.

No way. 15% is nothing to live your daily life in a job you hate. Life is short, why live like that?

I'd do it if I was being paid like $5 million per year, because then I could retire after two years. But otherwise, no.

just realized who the OP is

Guy is probably talking $5k tops. So after tax, $3500 or roughly $300/month

That's a nice car payment or twice as nice of a place to live for him.

For sure do it

This new position could be the first step in changing your career path. This year might be a 15% raise but future raises and bonuses will be larger and 401K match if offered will be more.

This could be a step into a managerial type role where a bigger better position is next in line.

I've never shied away from taking on more responsibility as long as I knew my resume would reflect the title and tasks.

Don't be shortsighted!

If I was not making enough to cover the minimum needs, yes, I would. It would be crazy not too.

Right now I'm trying to decide whether I want to take a position that will give me about an 8% raise. I don't know if it's simply because I've gotten used to working where I am (sometimes a "comfort zone" is nice) or a weird sense of job loyalty, but it seems rather inane for me to stay on a project that drives me fucking bonkers.

Of course, my manager just thinks that I'm bored and need more work because I told him that I think the team is overstaffed (honestly... it is). That would also mean giving up the pay increase... what a deal!

This.

I voted no because it seemed to imply that managing people was something you would hate.

If you are a comfort-zone person then stay there; lots of people hungry for advancement that you don't want to fight with

Never. In fact I find the less responsibility, the better the job. Screw this notion that you need to move up in the world. If you are happy with a job and it pays the bills then that's what counts. You spend a good chunk of your life working, may as well make it as pleasant as possible. Retirement is not really something to count on with this economy. Companies are cutting retirement funds, government is cutting retirement programs etc...

Who would I be fighting with? I already have the job offer for the other job.

Well, there are some people that like some of those extra responsibilities. Personally, I just like being a software engineer. I have no desire to go into management of any kind... the thought of wasting my life with things like IMS is enough to give me nightmares!
