depends. if i refuse what are the odds they are going to just let a lot of people go?

though v1001 is right. at this time i would take the pay cut. 90% of what i was getting is better then zero.

I think the logical thing is to take the cut and live with it while you find another job. I'd definitely be leaving, provided I can find something.

Depend on if it was 10% cut for everyone?

Does company give same pay raise/bonus for everyone when company does well or just management?

If the company was going to go under if I didn't take a pay cut... then yes. Though how often do state universities go under? Not sure...

I've always got an eye out for another job. A 10% pay cut decreases the attractiveness of my current job, and thus makes it more likely I'd jump. Of course, in this economy there may be no other available jobs, or they may pay less as well.

Wouldn't take a pay cut personally.

If I get laid off that's a 40% reduction in pay, plus loss of benefits.
There's a recession brewing here, the likes of which many here have never
seen. I'll take a pay cut and do what it takes to stay at my job.

Any other potential employers would probably only be hiring at a reduced rate anyway. Companies are now asking for pay cuts or voluntary retirement or later they just fire people if enough people didn't bite. Look at the big banks now. It could be worse:

"Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Goldman Sachs Group Inc. eliminated 2,500 jobs in the fourth quarter and slashed average pay per worker 45 percent"

Lot of people don't realize they were overpaid on a gravy train to start. Sure it sucks it's changing and ending but I'd just be happy to keep my job in this economy. The numbers of unemployed and more firings to come is getting insane. The amount of cut backs and lost revenue is getting outrages. It's either cuts or your company goes under and you lose your job anyway. And it doesn't mean that just some new job is made in another company. Everyone is consolidating. If you don't follow this stuff you don't realize what deep crap we are really in and headed to worse.

That doesn't apply to the health care industry.
That doesn't apply to my job.

I would if I knew the full details of the plans behind it and that it would save the company from going under. I would expect some kind of bonus at the end though, like perhaps you get a cut, but then t hey give it all back later on when the finances are good. Like where I work you can buy shares and they also contribute, so say it meant that if you take the pay cut it means in a year they'll just contribute more to your shares, then I would be ok with that.

10% is not much compared to all the taxes anyway.

I'd take a pay cut if they'd just raise the pay of one of my teammates. He's seriously underpaid and if he leaves I'll have to take on a lot of his work, but he's got far more dev skill than I do and I'm not equipped to do it. That'd be to the benefit of the company, so I guess I would, but if I didn't see specifically where my money was going then it would depend on whether I could easily get another job I liked.

Does not getting a pay raise in the 2 years I've worked there count as taking a pay cut?

EDIT: And I'd be looking for another job.

well, they have been laying off and cutting out management positions. although your job doesn't seem to be in jeopardy, but who knows.

nothing wrong with trimming the fat
trimming to the bone is ok too? how about trimming so far that those remaining are overworked and now are being asked to take a 10% cut in pay.

the company is profitable.

hmm I wonder if mosh is possibly talking about her company or not....
