Would you tell your friends they may be laid off?

If you worked in HR and knew some of your friends in the company may be laid off would you warn/tell them ahead of time to be prepared for a possible layoff?

Depends on probability. Once you are sure they will be laid off, I would ask management to tell them promptly.

The consensus was stay out of it if you value your job -- in other words, meddling with these things is usually a fire-able offense.

People I work with who are friends hell no, sorry but that's business. My job ain't worth it.

Personal friends, sure, very discretely. As in, a personal call on my personal phone to their personal phone off the worksite. You could never prove it.

If you work in HR and warn your friends that they're about to get laid off, you're probably gonna get fired for breaching confidentiality rules or something similar, so NO, I'm not gonna warn anyone. If I'm gonna get fired for anything, I'd prefer that it be for something GOOD!

Not if I'm under confidentiality... but I would pass subtle hints like telling them not to buy anything expensive that they were planning to.

If you are worried about your job you can "leak" it to them that layoffs are coming but you are not 100% sure of the final list yet. But of course add the "you did not hear this from me..."

Being in IT I usually know about a week before someone is laid off. If I was in this position, no I would not as I could be risking my own job. I need to think about my family and our well being before any one else. It may sound selfish but what good would it do for me to loose my job along with someone else.

I'd imagine this is how I feel.

Of course : If it was someone I knew well and thought they could handle it, then maybe I'd consider giving them a headsup. But then again, that's how all the stories of people getting caught go isn't it? "I thought he could handle it..."
