You are moving backwards, he is attacking moving forward. You are off balance, he is not. You can not see where you are going, he can (or you have to take your eyes off of the attacker). He will win every single time. You just got yourself killed again.
Keep trying, you might get it right eventually. It isn't necessarily a bad thing to know what you should do before you are in a situation like that.
