anyone else get an email recently about the buy.com class action suit? i dont remember ever signing up for it... were we entered into a list somehow automatically? just imagine, after 2 years, we might actually get something! crazy...

i know this is OT but i thought our hot deals ppl would like to know. what do you guys think about this? it seems legit, and it mentions state appointed counsel so it doesnt seem like a scam (except that the lawyers would get a huge cut if it goes through)

I didn't get an e-mail message. However, I did purchase 2 of the monitors -- well, attempted to purchase. I want to see how this works. Since my name apparently isn't in the database for the suit, I wonder when it's too late to have it added? This should be interesting.

I got an e-mail just yesterday in regards to this topic as well. I did try to buy one of those monitors back then. My name and e-mail address must have shown up on some list.

I have moved since this whole thing happend, and the order to forward my US Mail has expired. Further, I now use a different ISP. Is there contact info in the email? What email address did it come from?

Thanks,

Yes, you can email them, but its not too helpful.... I emailed them twice. All they do is send me a copy of the letter... not saying ok, we have updated your stuff or answering any of my questions..... Let me know if you know how you can get an actual response..... rather than just that email....

I got two notices on one day and another a few days later.

I just wish they would e-mail me my two monitors.

The lawyers can keep the power cords and manuals as their part of the settlement.

How many people tried to buy one of these monitors? From the quick glance of the e-mail it seems the proposed settlement is for around $550,000. So after the lawyers get a chunk of it the rest will be divided up between the members of the class which if its a bunch of people won't be that much. Of course, any money you get is more than you started with.

About 1400, if I remember correctly. They shipped 141 or 241 from the warehouse. Settled out of court and in small claims for a few more. I figure after lawyer fees, 555,000-500,000 (my cynical estimate) that each person still on the list and not opt'ing out will get $45-mailing expenses... or about $1.42 give or take a few cents.

This is an excellent example of some idiot lawyer making a bunch of money off of something stupid. The consumers are the ones that will end up paying more for products if internet merchants get sued everytime they put the wrong price on their website and get a billion orders and decide not to honor it. Did you guys see how much the lawyer got? It was almost half of the settlement. I had ordered one of these monitors and was unhappy with the way buy.com handled it. If anything I hope this will make them change their customer relations. But to see some idiot lawyer walk away with all the money makes me sick.

You're probably going to get a coupon good for future Buy.com purchases.

Anyone remember when one of the airlines got sued?

Lawyers made millions and the cunsumers got $200 or $250 in coupons good on future trave that you could only use in $20 increments.

I thought the lawyers should have been paid in coupons in that one.

Got one too, but I dont use a monitor. I use an 18in flat panel. Buy.com had a hot deal on them a while ago for $1.5k. So far, my eye sight has improved cus of this, so I dont think I will claim against them.

Just saw this article on CNET
Seems like each of the 7000 customers affected will get around $50 if the court approves the proposed settlement.

Now...how do we Wounded Egghead Memory Children start one of these class actions ???

I wonder who was the one to originally come up with that 7,000 number and what body orifice they pulled it out of. Is someone just trying to lower expectations?

pjs ...

We just posted an explanation of the "7000" in the orginal thread: Buy.Com/Hitachi Class Action

BTW, it might help to continue this discussion in that thread (or its offspring). Several questions here are being answered there. Just a thot.
