average selling price $1200.
sales up 6.8%
near 10% market share.
in the worst economy since the great depression?

acer and toshiba also rising up the charts.

Apple (AAPL) computers sold surprisingly well in a shaky economy last quarter, according to a pair of preliminary reports issued Wednesday by Gartner and IDC.

The big winner this summer was Acer, which became the world's undisputed No. 2 computer maker, after Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), on the strength of netbooks that sell for under $400.

But Mac sales also grew, despite an average selling price of just over $1,200 and profit margins that are the envy of the industry.

Reporting only domestic sales, Gartner estimates that Apple shipped 1.572 million Macs in the United States last quarter, up 6.8% year to year, for an 8.8% market share.

IDC's numbers were slightly higher: 1.64 million Macs, up 11.8%, 9.4% market share.

These seem to be record numbers. Twelve months ago, Gartner put Apple's U.S. market share at 9.5% and IDC had it at 9.1%, but those were preliminary reports. Both firms revised their 2008 Q3 Mac numbers sharply downward and now say Apple's share of the U.S. market last year was actually 8.6%.

Neither Gartner nor IDC reports Apple's worldwide Mac sales. For that we'll have to wait until Monday, Oct. 19, when Apple issues its quarterly earnings report. Analysts we surveyed put total Mac sales anywhere between 2.6 million and 2.9 million, with a consensus of 2.76 million.

And still have jobs, apparently.

Apple did also cut prices and update their hardware earlier this year.

Old people too...they're going to Macs like crazy because "They don't get viruses".

Then they realize they have to totally relearn how to use a computer and start calling me :|

Yeah, my bro and sister in-laws just got an iMac. I told my wife it will be "interesting" to see how they adjust to the switch. It actually will be pretty interesting to see if "they don't get viruses" holds true also. I bring my laptop to their house because their old PC is infested.

In other words, Apple's market share actually remained flat or declined. They revised last year's numbers to show an increase this year, but all I'm seeing is "last year 9.5%, 9.1%" and "now 8.8%, 9.4%". They'll revise again next year to show huge gains again, yet same/similar percentages. Way to manipulate data.

This can actually be explained pretty easily. Macs are popular with students. Bad economy causes people to go back to school. Also, plenty of people who weren't willing to go Macs used an iPhone, liked it, and have since made the switch.

And yes, we need yet another fucking stupid Mac/PC thread.

It's not impossible for a Mac to get a virus; Macs just aren't targeted because Windows is such a big target.

My brother and his wife got a Macbook. They found the transition easy coming from Windows and love it. They rarely use their Windows PC anymore.

i don't doubt it.
the thing is, the computer world is so driven by the internet and web apps these days, all you really need is a fast/stable enough machine with a pretty interface and a browser.

all ppl really do these days is mp3's, facebook, youtube and email.

My daughter (sophomore in college) is seriously low maintenance. She asks for virtually nothing, but last fall begged me for a Mac.

I bought her one. Then I bought a shitload of Apple stock...

Two words:

iPhone
iPod

Debate the merits of either if you want, but those things print money for Apple like the Wii and DS print money for Nintendo.

People apparently love overpriced gimmicks but hey, more power to Apple for selling them at a huge markup and raking in the profits!

Oh ok, that makes a bit more sense... was unaware that gateway/emachines were owned by acer.

I have a cheap Acer laptop (custom desktop though) that I use for class or neffing in the living room.
My roommate also has an Acer laptop.

Gateway and eMachines are selling too, which is now Acer by ownership, and thus marketshare.

Oddly enough, my parents' first computer was an Acer with Win95, then our next machine was a Gateway with Win98. I upgraded that machine some, stole other parts and built them a new machine, and now they have a Compaq that does the trick for them.

Their growth in the phone market has been huge. I thought I remember seeing a chart a few days ago that had like 600%+ growth in sales for phones. Market share was still smaller than it is for WinMo and Blackberry phones, but if Apple can maintain that kind of growth, Microsoft and RIM better watch out.
