You are surprised? I find that surprising

New tech. But, it is cheaper than $1USD per GB, barely.

Yeah, seriously ... Am I the only one that remembers paying $15-$20 for a blank write-once CD-R in 1997? Once they got down under $10 my 2X SCSI burner was cranking out PSX games like Hong Kong.

I remember DVD players being $3000... don't remember CD, though.

As gsellis said, the price isn't all that bad. Hopefully multi-session or HDDVD/Bluray-RW discs will be useful/economical...

There were never $3000 consumer DVD players. Even when they were first released, you could get them under $400. Are you talking about DVD-Rs? The professional ones were around $3000, but that's the case with everything. By the time Pioneer 1X consumer DVD-Rs
were released, they were around $500.

Ha, I remember my dad getting a BetaMax player when I was 24 (I have a tape of me doing an interview on TV for the Morey Boogie Pipeline contest - don't have anything to play it on anymore... )

Nope, you're not the only one. My first burner was a cool $1,000.

God bless the dying US dollar. Blu-Ray is already here and at $20 for a 25GB disc and $25 for a rewritable, I'm surprised a bit that they are that cheap actually. VideoGuys is selling the Pioneer burner bundled with a write once and rewritable disc for $995. $950 is a bargain when you look back at the release price of CD's and DVD's. I do remember the first DVD-R drive released to the public from Pioneer and it was around $2000. You young whippersnappers also have no idea the agony of sitting around for an hour holding your breath while your CD was burning, for fear that breathing, even in the next room, would disturb the drive and ruin your $15 disc. We had no Burn-proof and had to walk 20 miles through snow uphill both ways just to get a computer with an external SCSI port to connect our burner, and we were still grateful.
