had poverty celeron g530 for a looong time paired with 6970 , it ran almost any game on medium-high settings but it still had a small lag in everything you do.

£75 later and got i5 3350p with a fresh install of windows, hot damn How everything flys, no lag at all, tested some games on ultra-high settings and it's just wow.
Hopefully won't need to upgrade for next 3years now.

also do you think it's worth buying ssd now or should I wait another year when could probably get 2X the space for same price?

You are being a little optimistic there. SSD prices are already quite low considering what you are getting. If you don't have one already I would advise picking up a 120GB for your OS and programs.

its still only 120gb for something around 60quid,
I remember buying my 40gb ,2years ago for 60 as well.
and 120gb is still quite small, Think in a year you will be able to pickup 240gb for around 50?

I had a Phenom 9750 paired with a 6950. It often makes sense to get one high end graphics card, rather than dividing funds across several pieces of hardware.

You go to war with the soldiers you have, not the ones you wish you had.

I still don't think "poverty" is the word to use here.

could be but ssd's are cheap to day , so look for the sales then buy.

If I had to guess, OP learned English as a second(+) language. I've never, ever, heard a native English speaker use poverty in that way.

Get the ssd. 64gb is plenty for the OS, 120gb is the best price point right now. Why wait for a bigger ssd when all your real gains are with the OS, which doesn't need that much space?

Get it now, while your i5 is still a beast.

Phenom 9750 was not low-end when it was introduced. (It'd be like buying a 4570 today.) Certainly not comparable to a G530 Celeron.

To your larger point: min-maxing works better in MMOs than it does on the computers that run them. If you have an expensive (for instance, but it could be another way around) GPU and a slow CPU, the GPU is spending so much time waiting on CPU that you're not seeing any benefit from the money you spent.

What is bottlenecking what is a complex thing that depends on everything from the game being played and features enabled to resolution, texture packs and mods, etc. So it's not easy to just fire off examples of "balanced" vs. "unbalanced" builds.

But if you upgrade your CPU and your framerates double (yes, I did that), chances are you would have been better off spending that GPU money elsewhere.

I had a i5 3570k and down graded to a celeron g530 when I gave up PC gaming. It really is a huge difference. If you need a ssd grab a good 120gb model and watch stuff really fly

Well, it certainly wasn't high end at the time the 6000 series came out, which I had intended to be my point.

And honestly, the original Phenoms were terrible. If only I had been paying attention to hardware back then...

The celeron isn't bad for simple tasks like web browsing but I wouldn't even try to game on my g530. That would be a big disappointment

I spent several hours this weekend playing Sid Meier's Pirates! (2004) so... I would probably have been fine with a G530, actually.

G530 is bad for gaming but, it's sandy bridge at 2.4GHz, which is not to bad compared to many mobile i3s and i5s, and a lot of people game on those, lack of HT and smaller l3 is not going to help but, it should still be as good as the higher end C2Ds for gaming, you can still play quite a few games with that...

obviously the i5 is a huge upgrade.

The best way to buy computer equipment is build up enough money until you can buy the second from the top, ie not the ridiculous part but the next step down which will be fast enough but not have the bragging rights.

Then the next money you start putting money in your savings account set aside for computer equipment and don't upgrade until you have enough money in there to buy quality gear. Don't use this fund for anything else, if you are raiding because money is tight you are putting too much in a month. I find with this system I can go three years in between upgrades and still have a relatively fast system when I upgrade.

Of course I got really lucky because 8800 GTX release came when I had money for it, and at the end of the that pieces time frame it was getting dodgy for what I wanted to with the system so your graphic card my need to be on a two year cycle. When I first started living on my own the hardware was changing so fast I had to upgrade every year but now if you buy fast enough equipment you can budget so that you are saving for new equipment and never having to buy on credit and when you want new equipment you are not still paying for the last upgrade.

A Q9400 OC to 3.4ghz is no slouch even in todays games, easily sustaining 60 fps in most games. These older CPU have a lot of life left in them!

A fresh OS install makes any system seem to fly. Going from a lowly g530 to a i5-3350p doesn't hurt either.
