I'm currently using Mercury. I've gotten quotes from Progressive, 21st Century, and many other online insurance quoting systems, but none were able to beat my current deal.

statistically, women have more accidents than men, HOWEVER when men have accidents it ends up costing much more to resolve.
read: a woman makes a few small fender benders, a man totals the car
I'm male and it hurts to say the statistics reflect me never had a fender bender or any type of other small accident in 5 years, but i've totaled one car

Hey guys,

I have a question for ya. I'm 28 and I'm about to get my license and located in San Francisco, CA. Now the question is I noticed that most people when they were drivers were covered under a existing family members
policy for auto insurance. However, I tried to get quotes and the range was from $4500-$5000 per year. Anyone know why the heck they charge so much? or is there a way around it since I can probably buy a few cars already with the amounts they are charging for insurance and anyone have any suggestions on what coverage to get? Thanks.

Same here..thing is though it wasn't even that big an accident for me....just a crappy ($400) car. Only damage was about $500-$800 in suspension damage to the front left wheel.

Everyone quoting their rates in here & none of them mean jack sh!t unless you're also going to quote your coverage, deductible, & policy limits etc.

I got a quote for 3 cars and 3 drivers at $3,100 for 6 months.

I currently pay around $1,500 for 6 months through AAA and the group discount through the credit union.

It was worth a shot

I don't think that it's that womenfolk have better hand-eye coordination, but that they have better dexterity. That's why they always use women for sewing in sweatshops.

This company couldnt even come close to my current provider, AMEX. They were nearly $250 more every 6 months. No thanks, i'll stick with my $490 every 6 with AMEX.

You know what, i dont care if they are $200 cheaper a year. I wouldnt trust "e-insurance" to insure my sisters barbie dolls. Who the hell are these people, Where are they locally, do you think they'll ever come inspect your claim, yeah when they feel up to driving there. What if i have a claim in the first year or two? They'll will probably drop me like raw meet to lions den.
What i'm saying is, if you change companies, especially to a company you just heard of yesterday, its your funeral.

You know what, i called around to about 3 major ins agencies. I could save roughly 100 - 200, but all of them told me, your probably better off sticking with your insurance company if you've been with them longer than a couple years. Especially in the mid-west, prices are going up from every company. Hell state farm just announced they wont even insure any new houses in MO and 3 other states around here. So make sure to ask if they see any price increases in the near future, its probably a yes.

I have heard a lot of people sing their praises for Geico in this thread. But I have heard horror stories about Geico. Everything from credit scoring to jacking up the rates unbelievably if you are in an accident and its even not your fault. Them and state farm I would stay away from even if it meant paying higher rates.

I don't know, my family has been with state farm for like 15 years and we've had nothing but good things to say about it. My mom *grrr, she drives up the rates* got into 4 accidents in 10 years and every one, we had never had any problems. THey tow the car, fix it, provide transportation. Plus, they provide loans. When my family filed for bankruptcy like 9 years ago due to a failing business and we wanted to buy a car 3 years later. State farm offered us 4.9 while the others would give nothing lower than a bone crushing 20.9% rate with 20% down.

I'd be the first to admit that state farm isn't the cheapest, but I'll tell you they've been good to us.

It's just that us guys do a lot of stupid stuff when we are driving. As for me, it turned out that Geico was cheapest among what I compared at $730 / 6months for an Audi A6 quattro (esurance, Progressive, and others). I think I might have gotten a cheaper rate at Allstate but that involves actually calling someone. Plus, I don't have much faith in Allstate anyway. I don't know how you guys get such cheap insurance rates. Maybe it's the difference in coverage since I opted for pretty good coverage overall.

I hate to start an argument here, but most women I've been in a car with are lousy drivers. What I learned when I took driving school years back (from the instructor) is that the reason women get cheaper insurance is because they DRIVE LESS. Plain and simple. If you drive less, you get in fewer accidents. How many girls do you know who run out and get their license the day they turn 16? Now think how many guys you know that do that? I know many of my girl friends (I am only 20) who did not get their licenses until they were 18-19. Also, it's funny that someone here said that women actually get in MORE accident then men, just that they are less major. I don't know how reliable his source is, but if that's true that would definitely confirm that women are far worse drivers. They only spend maybe 60% of the time on the road that men do, yet they cause more accidents?!

Also, on a completely seperate note, it is definitely NOT a good idea to go with an insurance company just because it is the cheapest, as many of you have pointed out. I have a friend who went with Geico just because it was the cheapest...one of the biggest mistakes he ever made. He got in an simple accident (his fault)...he made a claim and his rates went up, which is fine. But he waited almost a YEAR for them to pay off his claim. He had to keep the insurance that whole time because he knew if he didn't the claim would definitely never go through. If they are quick to raise your rates, they also better be quick to pay you. That can't (or shouldn't) raise your rates until something has actually cost them money to pay off. I personally have state farm...mediocre rates, but great service.

If the lowest rate you can possibly get is $4500-5000 per year, the solution is: Dont drive. For that kind of money, for most people it would completely offset the convenience of driving. For $4000/ year, I would gladly give up driving. Sell your car, and now you've got some $ and save the $4000 to boot. Use the money to take the bus everywhere, or even buy one of those crazy new Segway scooters. Or maybe not, those things are freakin' expensive.

That's the reason I didn't get a driver's license yet since I had a sticker shock with the insurance prices! I mean bus is okay but you can't find girls without a car... They'll automatically drop you just because you don't have a car.

Yea I second that state farm is a little bit more that Farmers, or Hartford, but they have been more than great. Last years hail storm came, the put on a new roof, sided our whole house (it was masonite before) and gave us more than an ample amount for the cars damaged, and our rates for homeowners only went up $3. I had my car towed 2wice in the past month (20 mi) and they paid the whole thing. It is seriously not worth going to some POS company like geico that spends all their money on CG gechos instead of helping out customers.

Noone here uses 21st century insurance? I believe they have great rates and great service too! I have 2002 BMW 325i and am a 23 year old male and pay only 1100/year in insurance with 1 AT FAULT totol loss accident. They paid more than KBB price for my old car and was fast about it too. The only thing is they did cut off my rental reimbursement immediately once they cut the check giving me no time to shop for my new car at the time.

I did have farmers a little while back and they were ripping me off at 2400/year.. can't belive i paid that much!!

I know the longer you stay with Nationwide the bigger a discount you can receive.

I pay ~$300 a month for Two drivers (One Accident/Three speeding tickets 10+), one sport car (99' Sunfire, HAHAHA), full coverage (50/100/50). Also have rental, towing, blah blah. $100/$250 deducables. Sucks that my wife is a safe driver, but I'm not. All I'll say is the majority of women can't drive. Anyways Nationwide has always been the lowest. About $30 more a month for a second car with full coverage.
