I had an account with Credit One Bank.

The card was fine.

I wanted to consolidate my debt so I took out a loan and paid this card, along with several others off.

I forgot that I had already paid on that month's statement (january), so when I sent them the full amount due, I ended up with a negative balance, technically they owed me like $18.

The next statement showed this, and it also showed that the account was closed.

Apparently, sometime in march, I had an annual revolving payment setup with GoDaddy for domain renewals. It was like $38. They charged this old card (account was closed) and yet CreditOne still processed it, charged it against my account, yet never sent me any bill.

I had no idea the card was even charged. I just got a call from them saying I have an outstanding balance of almost $100 and that I am several months late on my payment. I just logged into the account online, and it shows that my account is re-opened (without my consent) and they have been continuing to charge late fees, interest, etc. I actually only owed them less than $20 from the additional charge, but since I never even knew about it, I wasn't paying it, and they have been charging fees on it ever since.

WTF!!! :|

Send them a letter or email saying that you closed your account, give them proof that you closed it, and tell them to F off.

riiiight. This only works for people who use their CC's incorrectly.

Yeah really. Never had a problem because I actually keep track of all the accounts I have open. You should have known GoDaddy was on a recurring cycle and canceled it immediately after refreshing another year if you thought you'd forget.

And if you don't have any, no worry about using them incorrectly or not.

There are definitely some clauses out there for cards, bank accounts, etc. where they can be automatically reopened if a transaction occurs within x days of closing.

and again

it's wise to minimize the number of contractual relationships you have with American corporations, especially when it involves giving them access to your SSN.

the company you're dealing with is trying to extort an extra $80 & they might get away witth it because they have the ability to damage your credit rating.

i'd call them up and try to negotiate them down to $40. they probably have a financial quarter ending June 30 so the managers are under pressure to show profits.

"financial services" - what service are they performing ?

LET'S BARBECUE THE BANKSTER PIGS AND FEED THEM TO THE GUARD DOGS.

am i allowed to say that ?

I would never authorize any revolving payments on an annual cycle. Too easy to lose track of them and end up in a situation like this. And before closing an account, I'd keep it open for an extra month or two to make sure there arent any regularly scheduled payments I forgot to move to somewhere else.

I understand that. I thought I did all that.

My problem is that I always paid this card on time.

I paid the balance in full (and then some) and sent a certified letter stating to close the account. They did and sent me a confirmation letter. I logged into my account online and it even stated I had 0 credit available and a credit on my account of almost $20. I didn't want to fight over the $20 so I just moved on. I never received another statement from them, nothing.

I would have assumed that since the account was closed and there was 0 credit available, if someone did try to charge the account, it would be declined. Apparently about 2 months later, a charge did come across, and it was accepted. They re-opened my account, started charging fees, (interest, late fees), but NEVER informed me. I never received any calls, never received any letters, nothing. If I would have known about this, I would have PAID it immediately, not let it set there going unpaid.

They called me at work to tell me how easy it would be to give them my debit card info so they could settle the outstanding debt on the account. I told them I closed the account and at the time they owed me money. The lady said well it appears you have a balance of almost $100 due to late fees and penalties. I laughed and said no way. She seemed pretty sincere and non confrontational. She put me on hold to talk to her supervisor and when she got back, she said she was going to investigate what happened and call me back.

Then I logged into the account online, found it had been re-opened as if I never closed it and they were charging me hella fees.

Seems a bit shady that they didn't start mailing you statements again (or e-statements or whatever you had it setup for)....

Kind of like how banks will gladly allow you charge more than what you have in your checking account so they can get the NSF/overdraft protection fee.

if you read your credit card agreement, there's probably a clause saying that they can open up your card again if there's a charge to it (it's in my agreement)
