My friend shows up to day (he is a lab assistant in a private research lab here in Cali) and his boss calls him in to the office. Since he is a good worker, he thought it would be nothing. But his boss tells him, "Sorry, I am going to have to fire you to hire my nephew". The severance package is 1 month's worth of wage. He talked to our mutual friend who is a civil lawyer, and she told him that it is totally legal and to take the money and find a new job. He was not fired because of his age, sex, race, religion or anything like that, so since Cali is an at will state, this is totally legal.

I never knew you could do this.

Sucks, but I think private companies should be able to fire anyone for any reason.

He didn't even need to give your friend a reason. All he really needed to say was "We no longer require your services."

I dont understand why someone has to start off with "sorry...". They definitely aren't sorry about it at all, they are doing it for a specific reason after all, its not like it was an accident that he had to fire the guy.

Those types of things just piss me off
/rant

Yes, that is a lame reason, but i guess there is nothing illegal about it. At least he has a month to find a new job without being hung out to dry for rent and expenses

In fact, he shouldn't have said "I need to fire you to hire my nephew".

If he's a corn-fed, white-boy...he probably doesn't have much of a leg to stand on.

Although...he can start drawing on unemployment immediately....

any chance of him going to the bosses boss, or higher and tell them, see what they could do. Yes it's legal, but may be against the companies policy.

I like working for the state. It dang near takes an act of congress in order to get fired from here.

TBH nepotism makes up a very considerable percentage of job hiring and such. Especially for college internships and stuff, at least half the people I know work in the summer for their dad's company or one of his friends. The fact that he admitted it actually makes me kinda think that he IS kind of sorry, but oh well at least is sounds like the boss might write him a good recommendation or something.

My company has a 40 page company handbook. One page two:

You can be fired for a reason or no reason at all.

At that point, I stopped reading it.

And a friend stopped reading it..... he eventually got called into our managers office and it was alluded (the manager is a firend) that he should "read the handbook". My friend basically laughed and told the manager to read the last paragraph of page two. Our company treats us liek crap, but we get job security so long as you don't do anything stupid.

You do not have security, you have faith.
There is a difference.

The boss could have made up any excuse to fire him. At least he told the truth. Just saying "We can't afford to keep you on the staff" would have been sufficient.
