Before he could even pump the gas he had to ask cash or credit to get the right price/gallon. When the gentleman and scholar amdhunter said cash, the servant should have known to pump an amount rounded to the nearest dollar if he doesn't keep change on him.
Therefore, extrapolating out, we know the servant chose to deliberately pump an amount for which he couldn't make change. What possible motive could he have for doing this? If the servant was a special needs type it would have been included in the original testimony, so we can rule out negligence. The only other possibility is that this was a malicious act against an upstanding citizen with the end goal of swindling the customer.
Or maybe he made a mistake. It is possible.
if amdhunter wanted it done right, he could have gone to a self serve station and pumped his own gas like the rest of us probably do.
