This.

Good god, over a buck ninety?

What kind of fucking plebe pays cash for gas anyway? If you don't have a credit card that's giving you 2/1 for fuel purchases, you're doing it wrong.
25c/gallon is a lot more than 1-2%

1. Most of you young kids aren't old enough to know what "Full Service" used to mean at a gas station. It meant they cleaned your windshield and checked your oil (at the very least) while your gas was filling. It's incredibly rare that an attendant has cleaned my windshield for me.

2. If the OP is telling the truth, it does sound a bit scammy - managing to get it to 10 cents above a dollar.

3. So what if the attendant didn't have change. The OP didn't have change either. What do you do with the change if you ever go through a drive-through? I always have a least a few bucks in change in the car; most of friends I've been in the cars of also seem to have a little change tray or change holder. Heck, on my Sable, there were coin holders built right in.

First world problems....

Also, if the OP makes more than $10.80/hr, he lost out by waiting the 5 minutes for the change instead of just going to work and clocking the 5 minutes for pay.

$22.80/hour not even factoring in taxes, etc.

The time the OP spent writing this was worth more than $1.90. Give me a friggin' break . . . Honestly I think any American who gets this incensed over tiny amounts of money has emotional-adjustment problems.

You go to a full service station and are too cheap to tip?? Please put that in the thread title, while leaving out the lame excuses.

You know, I would expect that a full service station would be able to shut off the pump at exactly $50, if that's what you ask for.

In the dark ages, when I pre-paid with cash, the pumps did that.

How come you just didn't let him have a dollar? I know he pissed you off by filling your tank to some odd number..but come on, it was only a dollar he had in his pocket to give you back in change. He had to go inside for the 90 cents. You could have just let him have it all.

Or I could have gotten all my change back?

Or maybe he made a mistake. It is possible.

if amdhunter wanted it done right, he could have gone to a self serve station and pumped his own gas like the rest of us probably do.

Despite being full service only, it had the cheapest gas.

I don't think it was a mistake - I've been to many Full Service stations in NJ, and those guys are pros at stopping the pump at the right time.

10 cents over seemed suspicious, and again - he SHOULD HAVE LOOSE CHANGE for cash paying customers.

First world problem isn't a problem. Why is OP getting all pissy over someone wanting tip? Say no with a smile and go on your way.

epic thread fail

started right at the op. this is embarrassing. the attendant asked how much change you wanted back BECAUSE HE COULD'NT BELIEVE YOU ONLY GAVE HIM 1.90 EXTRA.

youre lucky there is even a guy that exists to pump your gas. in many places, its illegal. next time, dont be a lazy scammer and make people work for next to nothing.

yeah i delivered pizzas for years.. and there were times i said exactly that- "how much change you want back?". mainly because its just easier to ask then wait for the customer to think about telling you. 90% of the time, theyre like "oh yeah, just give me $3 back". and thats that. 10% of the time they are assholes like the op and say "ALL OF IT" and call the store saying you demanded a tip.

so the few ruins it for everyone, and you go back to just handing back all of the change without saying anything, as if thats normal procedure. the problem is, you would be surprised how many people either forget to give you a tip or they just dont know theyre supposed to *behind the door i hear "GET THE PIZZA KIDS, MONEY IS ON THE COUNTER AND MAKE SURE YOU GET CHANGE"*

the point is, you should know if you need to leave a tip or not before you go wherever it is. if you dont know, dont be surprised if someone acts like they deserve one. of course they make an hourly wage- that has nothing to do with the fact that its posted on the fucking menu to tip the drivers.

He had the balls to ask me how much change I wanted back. I said, in the nastiest way possible, I want all my fucking change back. He grumbled and made me wait 5 minutes while he went inside to get the 90 cents owed to me.

That wasn't necessary and didn't help you any. Jerk.

So you are saying doing something damaging to a customers car isn't wrong? Why doesn't he carry loose change? Why make me wait.

Leaving a gas cap loose isn't damaging the car. Sure, it might set the CEL as a notice, and he should have tightened it properly, but it isn't going to break anything

Why even make it obvious that you wanted me to leave the tip? I am not the dick here.

Given your history on here and the first thing you did by responding "in the nastiest way possible" ( as quoted above), I'd say, yes, you are.

BUMP!

UNRELATED!

Good for him. But if it had been me, I would have said "fine, you get exactly 18 percent and never any more."

I only recently learned that it's customary to tip gas station attendants. Being from NJ where we aren't allowed to pump our own gas I always considered them to be equivalent to other retail workers that aren't generally tipped.

Must have had an attractive server...

To OP: Take the buck and be thankful a working man got your change before the homeless...

Ringing up your groceries is sure as fuck a service. I'm doing finance work, it's a a service as well.

How about the bag boy?
How about the people that do your dry cleaning?
Clean your house?
Mow your lawn?

Come on fucker I can go on and on and on, you're still the moronic fools looking retarded because you feel obligated to tip everything that walks and has arms

wow you suck as human being.

if some dude pumps my gas at a full service station, i have no issue with giving him a couple of extra bucks.

EDIT: The station is FULL SERVICE ONLY. I do prefer pumping my own gas, but they were the cheapest gas station around anyway.
Why didn't you pump your own gas? I've accidentally pulled into a full service one before, and I polite said I would pump my own gas. The guy wasn't a dick about it or anything. He walked back to his booth and everything was ok. It was winter, so he was probably glad that he didn't need to stand in the cold.
