Before he could even pump the gas he had to ask cash or credit to get the right price/gallon. When the gentleman and scholar amdhunter said cash, the servant should have known to pump an amount rounded to the nearest dollar if he doesn't keep change on him.

Therefore, extrapolating out, we know the servant chose to deliberately pump an amount for which he couldn't make change. What possible motive could he have for doing this? If the servant was a special needs type it would have been included in the original testimony, so we can rule out negligence. The only other possibility is that this was a malicious act against an upstanding citizen with the end goal of swindling the customer.

Or maybe he made a mistake. It is possible.

if amdhunter wanted it done right, he could have gone to a self serve station and pumped his own gas like the rest of us probably do.

I fail to understand the difference between places where you are supposed to tip and places where you don't have to tip in America.

Are you seriously telling me a guy who puts a nozzle in your car and pulls a trigger deserves tipping while someone who rings up your groceries doesn't.

How about your server in mcdonalds, ah but you say "but they don't bring food to my table" but sometimes they do if they don't have the food ready straight away. Do you pull your wallet out in such situations?

Why is it still customary to tip if your service was shit in a restaurant?

Why on gods green earth is the agreed form to give a freaking % of your bill anyway? If I want to treat my family to a lavish meal why should the server get 5 times more than if I went somewhere cheaper? The same work was done by the waitress/waiter either way.

If you want to be a sheep and be told when to tip and when not to tip that is your choice but lecturing other people on when to give their hard earned money away is crazy.

Spoken like a true IT worker

So he should pay more for less service? I think not.

What do you mean pay more for less service? If he pumped his own gas, there wouldn't be an issue with how much gas somebody else put in his car.

How many people on this forum go to Full service stations where there are peons pumping your gas for you, anyway?

I've never seen one.

If you read the OP he said all other gas stations charged more per gallon. So you want him to pay more per gallon AND have to pump his own gas. More money for less service. Bad service is still more service than no service.

I hope you called the station and spoke to the manager. He needs to know that his employee is providing sub-par service, and is in fact delaying service to the next customer while he's inside "counting change".

I live in Oregon, and every gas station is full service. I've tipped maybe twice, and that's when the person cleaned all the windows of my car and checked my tire pressure. Having lived in a few states I much prefer pumping my own gas in almost all situations.

Owner will say, you really waited for 90 cents back from him, gtfo and don't come back.

At least how i would handle it.

I can't recall ever using anything but my credit card to pay for gas and a tip is not even an option when doing so, even in Coquitlam where full service is mandatory. Had no idea people tipped gas jockeys on a regular basis.

I don't think the owner will be there very long if he would rather defend his jackass staff than his customers.

RANT ON -

Gas attendant tried to gyp me this morning. This is a station I frequent a lot because they used to offer full service and same price with CC or cash.

Well, they finally started doing 25¢ more for customers using CC. Fine, that's 5¢ more than anyone else, but whatever I had cash.

I told him to fill up my tank, and usually, they'd fill to an even number, like $50 even, or $50.50. Not this guy, he filled it to $53.10 and I handed him $55.

He had the balls to ask me how much change I wanted back. I said, in the nastiest way possible, I want all my fucking change back. He grumbled and made me wait 5 minutes while he went inside to get the 90 cents owed to me.

Fucking asshole didn't tighten my gas cap either. I asked him about it after he closed the door. I only noticed this because I wait for the clicks after having a Civic with "Check Gas Cap" light that took forever to turn off. I told him it's too early for this shit and I opened the gas cap and tightened it myself.

Stupid fucking asshole. Too early in the morning to get aggravated like this.

EDIT: The station is FULL SERVICE ONLY. I do prefer pumping my own gas, but they were the cheapest gas station around anyway.

Can't pump your own gas, can't figure out your own manly drinks, can't fit into your jeans, you're a cheap bastard... end yourself bro.

Never tipped anyone for pumping gas... and never had anyone tip me either when I used to do it as a kid.

1. Waiters often make less than min wage.
2. Pumping gas takes about as much effort and time as wiping one's own ass.

1. In most western states this is always illegal. It may be illegal in all western states.
2. Taking a order and puting food on a table takes very little effort.

He's already made sure he has the lowest price around, according to the OP. He may not be able to afford to defend his jackass staff to his customers.

You should have asked for your dollar back or whatever it was. Personally , 1.90 isn't a big deal to me. But when I go to jersey they are always full service. I use my card and the people did not expect a tip.

If gas was cheaper like what it used to be I would not mind tipping a 5.

I normally tip waiters and my barber although he still raised the price by 3 bucks I still tip a 5.

I used to work valet when I was in undergrad and not getting a tip sucked after running half a mile or so to get some guy's car. For gas a dollar or 2 seems legit to tip but I don't see it as absolutely necessary at all times.
