Wow I have Tuberculosis.

Came back from the doctor today and I found out that I have latent tuberculosis.

"In latent TB, the body's immune system has walled off (encapsulated) the bacteria into tiny capsules called tubercles. Although the TB-causing bacteria are in your body, you cannot spread the infection to others. However, you are at risk for developing active TB if your immune system becomes weakened."

My doctor attributed this to my 4 hours of sleep a day routine and such.

I've been prescribed a 9 month dosage of strong antibiotics (that my stomach apparently put up a war against today :/) and I have to take a sh!tload of vitamins. This is coming from a guy that's prided himself on being fit and ate healthy.

I wonder how I contracted this.. it's gonna be a rough 9 months. =\

Supposedly the bad sleeping patterns attributed to my weakened immune system. I'm still kind of bummed about it, but I really can't do anything.

How old are you? What symptoms did you have to motivate him to test you for tuberculosis?

I'm 18 now, it was for my volleyball medical. He did a routine checkup on me and the tuberculosis test (a shot to the forearm and subsequent tests on bumpage on the arm) came out positive. I took x-rays and it was obvious that I had it.

At least you didn't come down with active TB... Will the treatments rid you of any traces in your body? Or will some remain encapsulated?

Tuberculosis as far as I've learned is pretty rare and you shouldn't be worried about it.

I don't know, I've slept about 4 hours or less for about 3 years now due to school. I have to wake up at 5:30 to commute there, and all my extracurriculars, sports teams, hw, and all that keeps me up until 2-3AM every night. (Stuyvesant High School for the new yorkers that know what it is)

If I follow the strict regimen of sleep+good diet+vitamins and antibiotics, it'll remove all traces. (As in all cases of diseases)

It becomes a problem when a person gets lazy with the antibiotics, messes up their diet, etc etc.

Uh-oh...I'm def a terrible sleeper too; lately my sleeping patterns been from 6-6:30 till maybe 1 or so in the afternoon.

i had to do the 6 months of antibiotics for TB

i had a positive skin test in the Navy, their "cure" wasn't to test me to see if i really had TB, but to just do the 6 months of antibiotics

this was back in ~1995

i haven't had any problems since

Wow. Best of luck on your "road to recovery". While 9 mos. seems long, it will be well worth it for you to follow the plan, though.

You can also get this from swimming (I guess in non-chlorinated water, of course).
