It will be interesting to find out the cause.
Supposedly... The Niagara power grid overloaded and shut down. Power stations all along the grid tried to pick up the slack and overloaded and began shutting down.

They say that the system worked exactly as it was supposed to...

It doesn't help either that most plants need outside power to make power!. I guess they haven't managed to make themselves self-suffiecient yet!

From Reuters:
"We have no indication that there is any terrorism involved," said Bryan Lee, a spokesman for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington.

The blackout was caused by a failure at a Manhattan power plant that destabilized the power grid as far as Canada, Lee said.

One power plant in Manhattan overloads and it shuts down power from New York to Toronto to Ottawa to Cleveland to Detroit?!?!? And the system worked exactly as it was designed?!?!?

According to the Mayor of New York, the problem started in Canada. He then said it work like it is supposed to because they shut down before overloading to the point of doing damage to the plant. It is supposed to be pretty darn hot over there now and tons of people who rely on the sub way were stranded. Terrible event. Hope it is really just a power issue and not something else!

Woah! ,heard about it on Radio 5 ,hope things get sorted out quickly!

The grid must of been close to maxed out if just 1 power station shutting down caused others to overload!?:Q

Well, if nothing else, let's hope this is a big WAKE UP CALL to the folks in a position to do something about our energy dependence and power grid systems.

Also, consider this: So far they're indicating that this isn't the result of any terrorist act, but I'll bet there are terrorists out there getting ideas based on this unfortunate incident. :disgust: To realize that a single plant being taken out can have such a widespread effect - makes power plants a perfect target. Let's just remain vigilant and hope no one is able to pull it off.

Well , We have power plants that do Not need power to create Electricity, and we are the biggest producers of power in the World,
We use water dams, to do the job. Hydro says it can push over 350mega watss to newyork state and Ontario, but they need to get their links up first!
Go figure,.....

Yah, sux. My SETI production will be down because our xorporate T1 goes out to the mother ship (oops, I mean corporate office) in New York and then out to the world, so I can't send units from my work machines.

Uhh...Sorry about that. You see I was trying to get things done in a hurry and accidentally connected the green wire to where the red one was supposed to go Guess we shouldn't have tested that install on a live grid. Systems seemed to hold up to the surge until it got out east. I got a little spark in the panel there in York, NE. Now that I'm back here in (near) DesMoines - people say they got a flicker

Sorry about that - I'll double and triple check my installs next time.

LOL@ CAD

The wife was with a friend sight-seeing in Mansfield, Ohio when the power went off in the city. They made it back to Coshocton, and the power was on there.

Well power is returning, we have power in Toledo Ohio now. I imagine that the cities affected on the outside fringes of the outage will get power back first, althought that means NY will probably be last to be completly back on which sucks for a lot of people.

I guess the power plants just shuting down is better than melting down or worse (there are several sizable nuclear plants on the great lakes).

As far as I'm concerned .... WHO CARES???? What's the big deal about it? I don't care. My power is on. It's not my problem.

Bush is an idiot. He should have been spending more time and dollars to solve this problem before it even happened. This is a no brainer. It was suppose to be addressed long ago. What did we do instead? Spend billions of dollars in Iraq, Spend billions of dollars for home land security. Oh, Jeee, Did we ignore the economy and the rest of the problems? Like if a terrorist threat was so "important"... I don't care how much cash or how far you raise the ceiling on the deficit you'll never eliminate the possibilities of a terrorist attack. You might as well spend the money on 20 billion good luck rabbits feet to give to every person in the usa and tell them good luck we hope you are safe from a terrorist attack. I say relax...and enjoy the show. It's going to happen anyway. It's a calculated risk. If you drive your car down the highway it's a 5%-10% risk that one day your going to BLEED to DEATH on our highway system... We don't spend 100 Billion on having special "Hiway medic crews" linghed up on the highway waiting for you to have an accident even if we did it would be impossible to cover every little road in the entire USA...

What a waste of $$... Now we have even more to worry about and we can't even keep the lights on @ home. It's pathetic.

I know this going to be a bit off-topic from the thread here and normally I wouldn't do it, but ericlp's post got me wondering.. why is it the U.S. always seems to have tens or hundreds of millions of dollars that it can funnel to other countries during various crises or in some kind of aid package, when there's way more than enough projects and people to be taking care of here at home?!?

It's not a Bush thing or a Clinton thing or any other president for that matter.. it's been going on for decades.

Okay, that's far enough off topic for me - apologies to the Mods.

The power was down here in cleveland from 4:10 until 11:30. I was working on a computer at the time it went down, I thought I really messed up . I hooked up a power inverter to the car and fired up my p166 thinkpad and went online. I was thinking it would be a great time to set up my telescope when the power came back on. Thre was no background light for miles the stars were very clear. I put eccp2 on the notebook but it didn`t find a DP.
