My sister is in the U.S. for Christmas from Brazil this year. I went downstairs to eat breakfast earlier today and sat down while our mom and my dad talked about politics in Brazil. So my sister starts talking about her Husband whose a mayor of a small town (circa 10,000). She goes on how the city pays 4000 reals for the library and camera's (city hall) internet access but that it actually costs the city 150 reals. They just pocket the rest. She went on and on about other jobs the city would ask with her husband always pocketing at least half. I was just about to throw up knowing that this goes on in my family. I asked her "why" "why do you do this?". She responds with "we have to" "If we don't other people do and exploit us". "If we don't help other people then they wont help us then husband will never be able to run for the national congress". Keep in mind this is one of the most intelligent people I've known. This guy has tens of degrees from Universities around the world and a PhD in some political science thing from Italy. How the hell did the U.S. get around this in the early 20th century and why doesn't Brazil do the same? I guess they don't want to since the politicians benefit and they wont stand to loss that... WTF happened in the U.S.? This crap irritates me. While these oligarchies benefit and grow richer the poor become poorer and the city slums increase in size. And the city of Rio complains about growing violence Non WONDER YOU IDIOTS. YOU KEEP STEALING FROM THE PEOPLE WHO ELECTED YOU TO REPRESENT AND DEFEND THEM.

This is what Brazil needs

Dunno if that would work... The poor would just get poorer and the rich richer. The poor in Brazil has little educational oppertunities so even if your a genius your left in the dust to rot. That would maybe work if people started with the same amount of land. But then how would people deal with other countries? Who would issue passports? What would define citizenship? There has to be SOME state.

That's not what happened in Somlia when the state was toppled there.

From the article:

Though Somali remains a very poor country, wealth distribution appears to be more uniform than in other African countries, as when extreme poverty was last measured in 1998 (percentage of individuals living on less than PPP$1 a day), it was faring better than wealthier West African and neighboring countries. (ibid.)

There wouldn't be any need for passports or 'citizenship.' With every piece of land privately owned, every land owner would decide for themselves who to allow on their land.

What's to prevent a more powerful land owner from conquering his neighbors?

Hence the Anarchy part of anarcho-capitalism. You better be armed to the teeth in Dissipate's world.

Well, you gotta die someday... might as well be for protecting your land.

I'd rather die of old age. I have no cowboy fantasies.

Is that because you just want to make an opposing point or because you don't value anything worth dying for?

I'd probably die for my family, but it seems foolish to go back about 200 years to that level of anarchy.

From neighboring farmer stealing my land to neighborhood burglar stealing my TV, I have the desire to protect what is mine, dying if need be. But I guess you can just call me old fashion.

I couldn't see myself dying for things... things like TVs, land, whatever can be replaced.

Unfortunately, much of the developing world, particularly central and south America, works on the principle of mordida. The sad truth is that it's expected, even necessary for survival in some situations. Police officers in various parts of the world aren't paid enough to survive, so they have to compensate, and also have to kick some of it up the ladder, too...

It's kinda like the mafia institutionalized, which is what Dissipate's anarcho-capitalism would quickly devolve into, as well- might makes right, and entrenched wealth trumps everything else...
