WoW like singleplayer game?

Does one exist? I'm looking for something to tide me over until Diablo III. WoW got really stale so i quit a while ago. I'd like to stay away from a subscription game.

well, Guild Wars is subscription-free, can pretty much be played single player, can be had for quite cheap, and is much better than WoW, anyway.

Do not play an MMO if you want single player. MMOs are all about the community, although WoW has managed to destroy community building via cross-realm dungeons and battlegrounds.

If you want the same look Spellforce 2 basically stole WoW's graphics, right down to the questgiver's "!".

Not exactly the same type of game though. Still some mindless fun to kill some time.

I can't stand to play WoW since I quit a few years ago but GW was 100x worse (in my opinion, of course)

yeah, but my opinion > your opinion :awe:

(I find that I don't really want to play GW much ,either.)

either way you look at it, once you get to grind city in the end game, that's all there is for any MMO.

There are also many free to play MMORPGs. Lord of the Rings Online is definitely worth trying if you go that route.

You don't want a subscription, but are you looking specifically for a single player game, or and MMO that plays well as SP?

If the former, I would also agree with pontifex and say Oblivion, the witcher, games like that. Maybe torchlight if you are looking for something to get you back into Diablo style play before D3 comes out.

If you are looking for a F2P MMO that has good single player qualities, maybe runescape?

I'd recommend torchlight too. More wholeheartedly even, if I hadnt had several problems with corrupt save games since buying it. If you have more than one character the game has a chance to save over your other character with your current character, giving you two copies of the same guy. Extremely frustrating, and has cost me literally hundreds of hours of playtime. They havent updated the game in years, so it will never be fixed. I shelfed it months ago for this reason, but its still a good game.

I'd just hop around the F2P mmos until you find something you sort of like. They're basically all WoW mirrors anyway.

I am surprised nobody has said Borderlands yet. That was just like WoW only in single player format. "Hey go kill 12 boars!" quest crap. I enjoyed it though.

I'd say Final Fantasy 12 and the .HACK games on the PS2 are about as close as you get to MMO without the MM or the O. Also, White Knight Chronicles II (comes with a fixed WKC 1 for free) is also about as good as it gets for MMO-lite. It is like playing an Guild Wars only like a modern FF12. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are also noteworthy for MMO-lite gameplay.

On the PC you should wait until Guild Wars 2.

WoW 'can' play like a single player game if that is how you roll. But, like in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, you cannot get out of PVP (if you roll in wow on a PVP server) unless you know the game mechanics and tailor your build to do so.

It is all subjective anyways. Most MMO's that follow WoW/EQ's brand of RP will have safe RP or PVE servers that you can tailor to single player quest. Just don't think you are going to play end-game content without others. And that is truely where the 'epic' nature of the games come from.

I thought Gothic 2 and 3 had a sort single-player MMO feel. (No offense to Gothic fans who are MMO haters.) I guess Oblivion too.

If you want a decent MMO without a subscription, try LOTRO for free.

heh, its both good and bad.

I many many many hours in TBC, finding groups sucked but you maybe met new people do talk to and do stuff in the game with.

I played for a week a few months ago and I found the cross realm dungeons to be great except no one talks, no one says high, its like playing single player.

Almost any dungeon crawler would probably satiate you for now. Torchlight II should be out relatively soon, and reminds me a lot of the transition between Diablo and Diablo II (more story, more open areas, etc). You can always play the original Torchlight, but I'd highly recommend checking out some of the old threads on it here, as I would not recommend playing without mods.

Diablo III should be out early next year as well.

That game can be ridiculously addicting if you also tend to be a fan of dungeon crawlers (like Diablo). The idea of one-upping your loot is such an enticing draw!

Unfortunately, the game just went off sale on Steam! Also, it's really not as much like WoW unless you really liked playing Hunters.
