not to fuel up the rugby/football debate, but rugby guys don't look like this:

Do they don't. That guy looks fat and unfit.

If you think AMerican football teams are bigger or tougher you have never seen a rugby team. A very quick google image search turns up these:

American football players bigger? Most definitely. You don't see very many Rugby players running around at 250-350lbs.

Lomu is 6'5" and 120kg - that's got to be over 250lb, and he's not even a 'prop', who is usually the heaviest member of a team.

Why would American football players be bigger? Americans are not naturally bigger than europeans or anything like that...

And I say again - the guy pictured as an example of an NFL player is fat. This is no good in rugby as you have to run for 80 minutes.

I'd expect this kind of behavior from rugby or soccer hooligans, but not the NFL. He needs to be taken down a couple of notches, preferably with criminal charges. That kind of mailicious activity has no place on the field.

That would be why I said, "You don't see very many Rugby players running around at 250-350lbs" This is the norm for all the position on the 5 man OL, 3-4 man DL, 3-4 man LBs, and TEs. Occasionaly, FBs and RBs get up over 250lbs too.

I would imagine that guys Lomu's size is not the norm in Rugby.

I think you're third statement explains your question. NFL is a different game from Rugby with different needs. OL and DL may have some fat on them but they are hardly out-of-shape or unathletic.

Dude, that Titans player is 6'6" 320 pounds. That Lomu guy you posted is 6'5" 266. That's a HUGE difference in size, and Haynesworth is not exactly the biggest player in the NFL either.

He's still bigger..nobody's saying he can run faster/longer.

He's damn lucky he didn't put a cleat in his eye, he would have done some prison time.

That replay footage is graphic, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't show it. He kicks Gerode's helmet off then stomps him twice in the face

Well he is bigger than Lomu then, fair enough, but I could go get you an even heavier guy and we could do this all day. I guess NFL players do carry more weight - but does that really make them stronger or tougher? I'd take muscle mass and fitness over pure weight any day.

Actually I'd love to see a grudge match between Rugby union, Rugby league, Aussie rules, and NFL at some compromise between the 3 games. Maybe a form of rugby but without the forward-pass rule. No wussy armour of course

I think the original arguement was that NFL players are heavier, thus the stomping on someone's head is pretty bad. Even if rugby guys are more athletic, a fat NFL player stomping is much worse than a not-as-fat rugby player stomping.

And, to respond to what you said earlier, yes I do think Americans are bigger. Our fast food and diet habits make us bigger. I don't know about tougher since thats a subjective trait, but we are definately bigger.

on something like this the guy should be kicked out of the NFL. thats just nuts.

as for the rugby NFL argument its silly. the 2 games are very diffrent. in the NFL the guys are more powerfull in rugby the guys are in better shape/stamina. I have respect for both and enjoying bothwhen its on.

Keep on eye on halftime shows if you still haven't seen it. They just showed it during the pre-game of the Bengals/Pats game.

I was about to say that. They're a hard plastic, not metal.

If they're the screw-in cleats, they'll still hurt like you wouldn't believe. I had my hands stepped on more than once by those and these were high school kids. Can't imagine a 320lb guy stomping on my face with them...

Click on "stomping mad". You can see the guy with his leg up, but not the guy he's stomping on. I hope he's suspended for at least a few games, even the whole season.
