I like it when the manufacturers let their processor performance do the talking for them
Upon release Conroe did indeed show the massive performance gains over P4 that were indicated in the pre-release benches.
If Penryn can show 10% improvement clock-for-clock over Conroe while using less electricity, clocking higher, and having native quad core then I would think it to be a very good evolution of the Core line.
If Barcelona can beat Penryn then that will be fantastic.
There really is no down side to Penryn coming out as a great chip.
If Barcelona can't compete then we are all eventually going to be in trouble as Intel prices will climb and progress will begin to stall as long as Intel doesn't have any serious competition.
I for one am not looking forward to $500 entry level cpu-after-Penryn processors. If there is minimal competition for Intel's latest and greatest then they can continue to sell what is a little faster than AMD at the time at competitive prices and keep the really good stuff way to expensive. Like how the quad core is priced currently. Do you think there would be a $266 quad core on the way if there was no quad core Barcelona on the way?
