I like heavy beats and deeper voices, or at least voices and lyrics you can hear.
The shrilly high pitched screaming metal are not my cup o tea.

I don't think most of those are considred metal. They fall more into the category of hard rock.

Or even alternative.

They call them "nu metal", but I think thats a stupid term, because they don't fit into any of the metal categories. Hard rock really fits the bill.

Trivium and Tool would count as metal though.
You are right. They are considered nu metal or alternative metal.

The only songs you hear on the Top 40 from any of those bands, are the singles that are made to get the band exposure and generate money.

nah, computer geeks listen to prog and symphonic/power metal. it's fairly predictable.

I kinda lump the computer geeks and anime dorks in the same category probably due to the fact that back when I was in high school those two cliques were actaully one

sorry

HOLY 1337 posts, batman!!!!

so were you more computer geek or anime freak?

I never listened to DT really. Is it worth starting now? What albums should I start with?

Hvis Lyset Tar Oss by Burzum, especially the first and last tracks, is a mesmerizing album.

Also check out Sleep Terror and Blotted Science if you like jaw-dropping technical metal without vocals. Ron Jarzombek shreds on that album.

Although IMO Filosofem is a better album... it would be perfect if it didn't have that 25 minute keyboard track

Their roots are definitely in hardcore. They've become more "metal-core" in recent years, but I would never call them a metal band.

However, I'm sure that show with Slayer and Arch Enemy was amazing.

Slayer
Testament
Cromags
DRI
Pantera
Anthrax

I liked a lot of headbanging music too but that seems like just "hard rock" compared to speedmetal.

I stopped moshing 20 years ago so haven't kept up with the thrash scene and forgot most of the old bands. Do they still have mosh pits at the shows these days or have those been outlawed?
