I like heavy beats and deeper voices, or at least voices and lyrics you can hear.
The shrilly high pitched screaming metal are not my cup o tea.

I don't think most of those are considred metal. They fall more into the category of hard rock.

Or even alternative.

They call them "nu metal", but I think thats a stupid term, because they don't fit into any of the metal categories. Hard rock really fits the bill.

Trivium and Tool would count as metal though.

Currently loving Masterplan and Allen & Lande's works. I'll probably move into Symphony X soon.

QFT...slipknot, stone sour, korn and tool are definitely heavy played on even Top 40 stations...metal never makes their cut.

And of course Opeth can do nothing short of perfection). Other favorites are Dream Theater, Iced Earth, Metallica, Lamb of God, Nile, Iron Maiden, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Testament, Pantera and Emperor. The new Trivium album is pretty good too.

Oh, and since we're also sharing non-metal bands, I also love country (Alan jackson, Clint Black, Dierks Bentley, Nickel Creek, Brad Paisley and George Strait just to name a few), oldied, classic rock and a bit of hip-hop. Just discovered Explosions in the Sky too, a post-rock, Godspeed You! Black Emperor type of band. Going to see them in concert next in April.

Zao's Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest is by far the best album. The new stuff is sold out and crappy.

Some favorites:

At the Gates
The Haunted
Embodyment (1 album only)
Slayer
some Meshuggah
Living Sacrifice
Children of Bodom
Suicidal Tendencies
Killswitch Engage
Unearth
Soilwork
In Flames
Nile (though in smaller doses)
Scar Symmetry
Arch Enemy
Dark Tranquility
some Dimmu Borgir
As I Lay Dying
The Agony Scene
some Sepultura, older stuff
Hypocrisy
Exodus
Testament
some Therion
Zao
Trivium, though the internet has made it hard to take them seriously
Dragonforce
Darkane
All Out War
Machine Head
Nevermore
Amon Amarth, viking metal!!
Chimaira, though I've always had some sort of reservation about it
Ion Dissonance
Burnt by the Sun
The Red Chord
The Acacia Strain
The Black Dahlia Murder
Extol

I'm sure there others I'm not remembering. I used to be into this scene as well as the hardcore scene, though I've drifted from it as I've grown older. Still definitely enjoy the music.

Heh... I always have a hard time choosing favorite bands mmm... each one is great in its own style

Nightwish, Rage, Drudkh, Dimmu Borgir, Thirdmoon, In Slumber, Mercenary, Dark Tranquillity, Communic, Draconian

It totally depends on the mood... These were just random picks and I usually work by "phases", so one week all I listen to is power, the other I listen to doom, then melodic death etc etc

Just tool and dream theater. I could live without james labrie though.

HERESEY!!!!

His voice matches their style quite well I think.

Maybe, but I still find it hard to listen to for extended periods of time. I can't quite put my finger on it. It just doesn't work for me.

In a moment of hilarity, when they played @Los Angeles, he forgot not one, but two verses in one of their songs. He was not pleased. He also dresses like a modern day vampire.

DT doesn't really float my boat either, mostly it's the vocals, but it's also partly that their music gets a little... I dunno... noodly?

Bullet for my Valentine.Other than that, I really can't stand screaming death metal.

I like Linkin Park. In fact, it's all I listen to now. I R Fanboy.

You need to throw in quite a bit of Rush for good measure....

Pig Destroyer is bad ass. I was good friend with Brian the drummer back in high school in herndon. we were probably equals on the drums growing up and sometime around then he just took off and became one of the fastest drummers I've heard. Put me to shame.

I kinda lump the computer geeks and anime dorks in the same category probably due to the fact that back when I was in high school those two cliques were actaully one

sorry

IMO, most of the good metal comes from the Scandinavian countries. You also see good stuff from Germany, the Netherlands... and occasionally another European country.
