the base game cost a fair amount itself, plus you also have to pay a monthly fee just to play.

Some MMO's are monthly only. I like that better. You dont need a huge investment just to discover if you like it or not.

I know for a fact that back when it cost $60, you also got 4 months free. If that's no longer the case, then I just have out-dated information.

IMO, HOTS was superior to the WOL story. It was one of the better efforts by Blizzard in a while.
