WoW - Stats & Resistances

Alright. I think I have a good idea on how all the regular stats work wrt what they do for you. However, although I can guess what the resistance do, I'm not 100% sure how they work and how much of a value they are (ie. chosing a piece of equipment with resistances over one with regular stats). My guess is that resistances will reduce your damage against spells of that type, and/or increase the chance of you totally resisting the spell.

The reason I'm asking this now is that I have the opportunity to get a piece of armor that although it has less regular stats than what I currently use, it also includes +10 resistance to 3 different areas, plus a spell damage shield ability (Dragonscale chest piece). I think it is an improvement, but is it enough to warrant the cost. I'm not sure. That ability sounds good, but as a shaman, if I'm going 1on1 against a PvE caster, I can usually keep them from ever casting with my Earthshocks, and can drop the Grounding totem to kill any offensive ones that the shocks miss.

Thanks for any input.

IMO it's better in instances and PvP than in general. I wouldn't use it as your sole chest piece.

keep it for your resist set. Many people have different sets in their bags for different instances/situations.

Resistances are jacked unless you get a lot of them, in my opinion.

What they do is simple - the higher it is, the better chance you have of resisting part (and there are several levels or partial resist - basically 10%, 20%, etc) or resisting completely. Problem is that lvl is a bigger factor against resistances. I'll resist almost anything from someone 20 levels below me even if I have 0 resistances. Also remember that the max resistance in WoW isn't 100. It's 250.

Stats are much more useful, in my opinion. I play a pally, and my resistance auras add 60 to whatever class of spell I have the aura on for - and my character sheet still lists my resist as "poor". Plus it doesn't stack with any other buffs.

Stats are easy to tell what they do.

STR - More melee damage, and more damage blocked by shields; 15 str = 1 DPS for anyone but a hunter/rogue. It's double for them.
AGI - Increase dodge/Critical strike chance/Armor; Adds damage for Rogues and Hunters; 15 agi = 1% crit, 1% dodge, I believe.
STA - increase health by 10 per point
INT - increase mana pool by 15 per point; increase critical chance for spells; increase speed at which weapon skills are gained; 15 int = 1% increased crit chance
SPI - Increased mana/health regen. 15 Spi = 1 hp/mana more per 'tick'.

*It's been a while since I looked, so I *think* 15 is the magic number. Might be better to say somewhere between 15-20, as I'm positive it's in that range.

Blizzard needs to put more resistances on normal equipment. As it is, if you want resistance gear, you basically need to give up every other benefit which is simply not realistic. I personally think resistances should be on equipment just like armor is.

link both items on thotbot or alakazam.
The resist gear is for the most part not worth it unless for a specific instance. (Molten core with fire resist gear)

Thanks for the info. It seems that my instincts were correct since I didn't buy the armor with the resistances. Took my gold and put a bid on an epic ring in AH instead. I probably won't get it, but what the hell. I hate having to go to work when a nice item is up for grabs in the AH. It was set for very long, but that was last night and will probably be gone when I get home after work. Not that I could have bid very much higher anyway.

Sorry to derail this thread, but one thing I did notice is that there seems to be a couple people who are placing a good number of high end blue and epic items for sale. I am level 50 and have never got a blue or higher 'bind on equip' item to drop. Do guilds typically pool there items and have only one guy selling? Or are there any places that seem to drop these items more? Or is it like I suspect, and these are the infamous Chinese item farmers who have multiple people playing them around the clock?

Up through level 55 or so, i very rarely, maybe never, found any blue BoE items. They were always boss drops that were BoP.

Now though i've found a bunch recently, either solo or in instances, that are BoE. Not quite sure why.

Generally seems like in order to get enough resists to make much of a difference you must make HUGE sacrifices in important stats or somewhere. Even then you're probably only decked out to resist Fire or something.

There's not much gear with nice resists and also nice stats, except the epic sets which are uber hard to get.

I'm a level 50 - just got a purple BoE item in Ferelas - Gloves of Holy Might, I think is the name - me and another guy were hunting alpha woodpaws...he rolled an 87, I rolled a 91!

There was one guy on our server (Gilneas) who was constantly selling blue and purple BoE items - he claims he got them from his brother - but I'm talking about, literally, having items for sale at least every other day - Cashani was his name - no idea how he was doing that.

I really don't pay any attention to resists, nor do I carry multiple sets of armor/items around - perhaps I should, but I really don't.

I've gotten at least 5-10 blue BoE items off random enemies and another 5-10 from quests or BoP. I am also level 50. I have never gotten a purple item, quest, BoE, BoP, nothing. Your chances of getting a blue item are not good if you are only questing and not in instances. Instances and mass slaughter farming are higher probability. Though I have gotten a couple from kills while questing, I guess.

I got a blue BOE from murlocs in the Wetlands (20-30 zone), it was a semi decent polearm I ended up /trading for 1gold. Judging from the nearly immediate response, it probably ended up being disenchanted and the shard sold for more than they paid me for it.

I didn't care though, 1 gold was about a quarter of what I had at the time
