It's just a hamster, dunno why people are all up in arms. People kill tons of cows, bulls and chickens every day and nobody gives a sh!t.

I wonder if anyone complaining knows how cows have been killed. Cows have been known to take a hammer (or some other blunt object) to the head to crush their skull into their brain dropping them dead. Mmmmmmmm steaks and hamburgers.

Now that he's learned to kill he'll have no trouble coming back to whack her in a few years. May the circle be unbroken.

Woah that is brutal, that mother should be hit with the same hammer multiple times, hard.

And yes she shoudl go to jail not only for animal cruelty but for phsycological child abuse.

Messed up.

But honestly, have you guys seen a hamster? Those things are smaller than the palm of your hand.

I have a guinea pig. Those things are like water balloons. Maybe a Chipotle burrito. I put him in with a hamster and my guinea pig couldnt even see the hamster because it was so small. It trampled over the hamster trying to get to its water bottle.

So this tiny thing dying becomes such tragedy to result in jail time? Come on. Stupid parent, but taxpayer $$$ going to this?
I don't give two shits about the hamster, it's about the child. If you had pets when you were little, wouldn't you be sad if one of them died? Now imagine your parent forcing you to kill the pet as a form of punishment.

Really, really sadistic and fucked up.

edit: As far as the battery charge, maybe she hit the child as well. Doesn't seem like a big stretch for a mother that would make her kid kill a pet.

How come you don't get animal cruelty charges for mouse traps, then?

Definitely bizarre though.

That hamster was gone after his bad grades. She was going to have him get rid of it or she would thrown it outside. Throwing it outside could have ended up with him getting run over, eaten by something bigger, starved to death, etc. Either way this hamster was not living much longer, she was discarding his pet asap due to bad grades.

Pretty much this. I don't feel so sorry for the hamster; it's the kid I'm worried about.

Not that I'd ever want to wish harm on a cute widdle hammy, but it is just a tiny rodent. The pain and fucked-in-the-headedness that kid must be feeling is the main issue here.

Because a mouse trap is used to kill a wild animal that is sometimes regarded as a pest.

That people can't seem to make the distinction with some child's pet and a pest is staggering. The hamster is domesticated and thus is protected under law... like a dog.

So?

Someone could say "it's just a dog" when doing it to a dog, I'm sure you'd be up in arms then. Bottom line is that it was the child's pet and it was a shit thing to do in the end.

Cows, chickens, bulls, etc don't come into this because we kill them for a legit reason - food.

Another thing, I've never believed in discipline based on grades. It's not a child's fault that grades are not good. Some tests/courses can be hard and no matter how hard you try, you wont get good grades.

Pretty fucked up. I wonder if this would be a issue if she had made him tear up his PS3 or similar inanimate object rather than a pet? If someone gave me the choice between killing a hampster and killing my computer I know what I'd choose...

Poor hampster...

Well, usually there are ways of figuring out if there's an inherent inability to grasp the material, or if the kid is just slacking off.

In cases of the latter, I definitely think disciplinary action is fair. (grounded, no video games, etc.)

Now if the mom forced him to destroy his X-Box with a hammer the kid would have become catatonic.

This is so fucked up. Why did the mother get arrested? She deserves to punish the kid in a reasonable way and her punishment was totally reasonable.Be honest, its only a hamster. It has as much worth as a rat, and we do anything we want to rats after we catch them. This child will grow up to be a spoiled brat.

He got bad grades; he deserves his punishment. He probably slacked off and spent too much time on facebook. Now, he knows not to spend as much time on facebook or next time, the family dog is next.

You are an idiot.

Totally reasonable?

Haha.

"Only a hamster" - it was a PET. And pets are protected under law. And no, we shouldn't "do anything we want" to rats after we catch them but that's a discussion for another time.

Ever had a pet of your own? What'd happen if someone smashed it over the head and killed it because of bad grades? Absolutely deplorable. It's not so much the hamster, but the scarring this will cause the child.

Oh, and I might have forgot to mention - you are an idiot.
