Hope you'll be feeling better soon, OP

Thanks

I've decided that since I've seen part of an episode of ER, I'm qualified to say that I don't need the Claritin D and prednisone. I'd really rather not take something that I don't need.

Not so fast. If you are having trouble breathing due to chest congestion, then you should take a decongestant. Prednisone is the added steroid kicker when your respiratory system needs a boost to help rid itself of the bug. That's why so many asthmatics get it short term when they get ill.

Trust me, you don't want to end up in the ER with a tube down your throat [or worse] because you stopped breathing or your dissolved oxygen levels dropped too far.

Just don't drive while on the codeine syrup. And don't send out any important emails either.

Well, it's not so bad that I'm having problems getting oxygen, it's just a little uncomfortable and makes me cough.

If things start getting bad, I'll take the prednisone, but for right now I'd rather wait.

Prednisone is some wierd sh1t. If you have alergies, it will clear them better than anything. It'll also probably make you horney. I had a 2 week course of it. Weird stuff.

Man, the cough syrup is kicking in. The first dose didn't do anything, but this one? It feels like all of my nerves are swirling around.

Well either I've transcended reality and can taste the color green, or it's working.

OMFG, you got prednisone for a head cold? That doctor is practicing malpractice and you would be advised to not go again.

The rest of the stuff I can understand but hydrocodone seems a little extreme.

Read the thread. He has asthma... the cold is seriously making it uncomfortable for him to breath... and his inhalers are doing next to nothing for him.

It is standard practice to give asthma sufferers prednisone to help them breath when colds and flus make their inhalers worthless.

He SHOULD be taking the prednisone. But all the wanna be doctors here have made him scared now.

Chaotic42: Take what your doctor prescribed at the recommended dosages and you'll be fine. The prednisone will make you feel MUCH better very quickly and the side effects from short courses are very unlikely and minimal.

When you're hacking and wheezing it's very difficult to get the proper rest you need to fight the cold. You're also many more times likely to develop brochitis. And I think you know how fscked you are as an asthma sufferer if you get bronchitis.

In short, listen to the guy with the medical degree and years of experience over these bunch of interweb experts.

I would really recommend you take the prednisone and Claritin D. You need the decongestant and the prednisone really will make your symptoms lessen. When I took it for a similar reason a couple months ago, it was the only thing that made my asthmatic symptoms go away. Even if the prednisone makes you feel hungry and a bit run down, it's not worse than the hydrocodone you're taking and it'll make you feel enough better that the negatives are less than the positives.

I never meant to imply that he shouldn't take the prednisone, it was more of an advisory to make sure there was something to eat on hand.

I know from experience that as an asthmatic, you can come close to passing over that line from where they can't pull you back when your lungs fill with crap & inhalers and other meds won't help. Asthma can kill & does, every day.

Take the prescribed meds, don't drive, get as much rest & fluids in as you can.

You can burn off the few extra pounds, if any, later.

One last note, if your peak flow drops to half of your normal rate, do not hesitate to call for help & get to an ER.
