Wow.. Went from a 10,300 to a 11,800 in 3dMark2001 with the change from a 9500 PRO to a 9800 PRO

Is this all? 1,500 points more with a 9800 PRO over a 9500 PRO? To be fair, I tried playing hte far cry demo last night with the 9800 PRO and some of the graphics or settings that choked the 9500 PRO were smooth with the 9800 PRO. I guess what's important is game play.

BTW.. I'm using the latest Catylist drivers from ATI's site. This system has a KT333 Epox board with 512 mb of 333 DDR RAM and a XP2400+ cpu.

3Dmark 2001 scores depend heavily on how fast your system CPU/memory is.

3Dmark2003 is much more GPU bound.

Yeah thats great.

The real point is, how does it improve gameplay? Or is the only thing your interested in playing is 3DMark....

Try the UT2K4 Demo (or UT2K3 if you have it). Or the Comanche 4 Demo benchmark. Anything but 3DMock...

That does seem low. I was thinking you should be up around 14,000 with a 2400+ 9800pro setup.

Do you have your M/B drivers installed? On my VIA M/B ? ? XP AGP Windows drivers work but are 15-20% slower than the VIA all in one drivers. Check to see that Vsync turned off and no AA/AF enabled.

(sorry for that empty post, my finger went to the ENTER key by itself )
I think that is indeed the rest of the system that's holding you back...
try to compare your GFX score in AquaMark 3 and see the difference - I'm sure it will be much bigger that the 1500 on 3DMark...

Hi your MB chipset is hindering your score more than anything. I get over 14K with my setup at 166FSB

Your memory and M/B are holding you back. You CPU not so much but still you should get a 2500+ Barton the best O/Cing CPU on AMDs side. You memory is probably OK but if you can iafford it id upgrade. However most of all you are in dire need of a M/B upgrade. I would highly recommend ASUS, Abit, DFI, and Gigabyte. They all have very solid boards. The ONLY way to go in AMD is Nforce 2 they are without a doubt the best M/Bs on AMDs side. When you upgrade your M/B your scores will sky rocket about 3000-4000 more points. (AGP 8x will be a nice asset to have as you are running an AGP 8x card)

3Dmark2001 is extremely useful for checking to see if the performance of ones system is up to snuff. It?s a consistent benchmark that provides easily configurable standard settings to test a system with the same workload.

When I got my Sapphire 9100 64MB, I tested it on 3Dmark2001 and it was 1500 pts lower than I expected. Pretty well knew instantly it was a 64bit memory bus card...*&^%^%%$$#$^$%!!!!!.

3dmar2k1 for CPU, 3dmark2k3 for video card. Game benchmarks are always preferable to either though.

Yea, my 3dmark2001 score SUCKS, because my cpu.....SUCKS! But my 3dmark03 score is 3701, which is decent I think.

(EDIT) O yea, and I totally agree, 3dmark is cool and all, but it doesn't compare to actually PLAYING the games

i agree that it does seem low. did u reformat or at least use a driver cleaner after switching cards? I always do that after installing new hardware. Maybe some 9500 settings are still in your comp, not sure

My guess is that he has AA/AF set to high quility in the control panel, that will force AA/AF on which will drop the 3dmark scores quite a bit. Heck I've pulled 11,500 with my Radeon 8500

RMA sal and stop reading these kiddies posts which cause upgraditis. There is no excuse to buy a 9800 if you have a 9500pro with all this new stuff coming this year. And will mature by 2005 .. DDR2, Nforce350, PCIxpress etc.

I bet you don't even have a reason to upgrade and that 9500pro played everything you own just fine. RMA
