Wow, why are we outsourcing to India?

I just got off the phone with Sprint customer service. Usually I get the Indian call center and I have trouble understanding what they are saying, but this time I got one from the Philippines, and I have to say their English is perfect. We should outsource all customer service to the Philippines!

Really? This chick had a perfect English. I sort of at first thought she was from Minnesota but the VOIP echo got me curious and I asked where she was. Not really a scientific sample.

A guy I worked with was a former Dell guy in the Philippines too, he had a slight accent but nothing too bad. I find Indian accents really hard to understand so I do prefer to talk to a Filipino.

The Philippines speak english as a result of American colonization. The Indians speak it as a result of British colonisation. Perhaps that accounts for the difference?

my wife and I went there for our summer vacation in 2006 and it seems that everyone speaks good english, english that i can actually understand easily. i would think that call-center business would be a boom especially in manila their capital city. it actually might be already.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Brazil is the next outsourcing hot spot for the US since its almost in the same time zones.

A few companies still direct their tech support calls to American call centers on Saturdays (the day of their highest call volume). Dell used to, not sure if they do anymore.

But if you asked her where she was, then that's pretty conclusive. Maybe she was from America though. Anyway, if you're a native English speaker, a foreign call center would be a nice gig. You would be like a GOD!

some of the call centers ask them to choose american sounding names. In fact a while ago I called in and was talking to Abraham Lincoln(lol not joking), apparently he's doing just fine...
