one day after a "vote of confidence" by buss.

Lakers fire Mike Brown as coach
The team makes a change after a disappointing 1-4 start to a season in which they were supposed to be title contenders after acquiring All-Star guard Steve Nash and center Dwight Howard.

The Lakers have fired Mike Brown as coach after the team's 1-4 start, according to a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Brown was barely a month into his second season with the team, which struggled badly amid high expectations.

It was unclear who would be his replacement.

It was believed to be the earliest firing of a coach in the team's history. Del Harris was relieved of his duties 12 games into the 1999 season.

The Lakers were 41-25 in Brown's first season, losing to Oklahoma City in the second round of the playoffs.

The team has had trouble picking up Brown's Princeton-based offense and has also lagged defensively.

The Lakers are set to play Golden State tonight at Staples Center.

No way Jerry Sloan is getting in there in my opinion. He didn't want to deal with the ego that was Williams in Utah ... imagine MWP, Kobe AND Howard ... *shudder*.

Good.. D'antoni and run up the score with Nash at point? Brian Shaw and run the familiar triangle?

He didn't want to deal with it on a fringe playoff team, but when you've got the chance to win a title? Keep in mind, Sloan has never won an NBA championship, either as a player or coach. You're telling me he wouldn't want to taste that?

So Mike Brown will never coach in the NBA ever again - send him to France.

I'm not a huge Laker fan but I'm glad Kobe stepped up.

I'd like to see Jerry Sloan coach. The man was a Coach of the year Finalist damn near every year he was with the Jazz for doing so much with so little.

If both Miami and Lakers don't make the playoffs it will be a great year and I'll be very happy.

Easily the most poisonous locker room in the N... sports. Good luck to whoever has to coach there.

I don't think so ... just my take on watching a lot of Utah basketball over the years. His often lower-skilled teams were so successful because he had such rigid structure to everything. I just can't see that being a fit with the Lakers.

I think they should have taken somewhat of a flyer with Brian Shaw before ... but to do so now, although cheap, wouldn't be any sort of guarantee. Jeff Van Gundy would be an interesting choice ...

This early, it's a shocker, but not as much of one as when they hired Brown in the first place.

One of the leagues worst offensive coaches while in Cleveland imo (just give it to lebron to 'create'), he must have provided sexual favors to get the LA job. The attempt at the 'princeton offense' was a complete joke and insult to the princeton coaches who actually ran it. An offense with constant movement off the ball is not going to work well with a team full of end-of-their-career veterans.

With Stockton and Malone he had them running a heavy amount of P&R, which would be perfect the Lakers this year (once Nash returns anyway). I think the allure of a championship is a pretty big factor though, especially when you've never experienced it.

D'Antoni would be good too. I think he got an unfair stigma about defense because of the way he coached the Suns those years, but it was more he knew his team couldn't defend (especially with someone like Amare down low) so he adapted as best he could.

Sloan is my main pick, with D'Antoni second.

I never did think he was a great fit for the Lakers. Lakers fans shouldn't be too surprised about this & should look forward to having a new coach.

Yea when Brown was hired, everyone was wondering WTF but was willing to give him a chance. He didnt deliver.

ESPN Radio had a good thought. Might be out there, but maybe Phil Jackson. Two days ago they said Mike Brown was safe and that they would give him a few more to figure it out, then all of a sudden they fire him? They HAVE to have something up their sleeve and something big to do that so quickly.

I thought about Van Gundy too.

For coach, in order, I'd pick:
1) Sloan
2) Van Gundy
3) Raffle for season ticket holders to be coach
4) D'Antoni

/edit: the reason not D'Antoni is because while he might have the smarts to coach defense, he proved in new york he doesn't have the ballz to hold people accountable who don't commit to off-the-ball or weakside rotations.

Definitely do not want D'Antoni. Im assuming you're talking about Jeff? Stan was actually a good coach and I'd be glad to have him but the whole Dwight factor rules him out.

Yes, Jeff. Stan was definitely solid, and agreed has 0 chance given the dwight factor.

vote of confidence from ownership means the coach will be fired before the next season.

they were just talking on the radio this morning about whether he'd be fired by the time the rockets play the lakers. didn't quite expect it this soon.

D'Antoni's style would be magic with the Lakers. Nash getting in pick-and-rolls / pick-and-pops with Gasol and Howard? There isn't a defense on Earth that could stop that. Add in one of the top wing scorers of the last generation and a pretty good spot-up shooter in Artest-Peace, and D'Antoni's system seems like a natural fit. And he's underrated on defense (including by myself). I don't like the Lakers, and the coach I most fear in the role would be D'Antoni.
