D'Antoni's system needs a very particular set of players to work, I don't know if the Lakers have the right players for that. The Lakers aren't playing any defense, and D'Antoni is most definitely an offense minded coach.

Would like to see it work though, because I like D'Antoni. Him and the Suns got hosed by David Stern in the 2006 playoffs (might not have the year right, but you know what I mean, against the Spurs.)

Agree, the NBA is a defensive league at the top, and D'Antoni ain't that.

However... Defensively, they might be able to get away to some degree with 'let Dwight handle it.' Leave the paint and D boards mostly to him, it might work til he gets in foul trouble. And teams will hesitate to hit the offensive glass too much when Nash is running the break.

But I hope it's a spectacular failure, even though I like Nash.

I expect the Lakers to do very well now, provided Nash comes back from injury relatively soon.

The Suns were never an elite defensive team with D'Antoni, but they never had the roster to be that either. Dwight Howard absolutely made Orlando a good defensive team on his own. He can have a similar impact for the Lakers. The Suns were never bad defensively, they just played a faster pace so their ppg they gave up was higher.

The Lakers are more talented (even with age) than most other teams. Playing uptempo is playing the odds. The more shot attempts each game, the more their talent differential over their opponents will show through. When the game needs to slow down the Lakers have people who can crash the boards and get stops late.

Good move for the Lakers. I really like D'Antoni and Nash, and I'm pretty cool with Gasol. I hate the Lakers, Kobe and Dwight though. It is gonna be tough to watch them, but they certainly will be exciting now.

D'Antoni and Kobe go way back, waaaaay back. Nobody can really handle Kobe but if anyone can cajole him it is D'Antoni.

That said I think the Lakers really need to move Gasol for some speed guys/shooters now. It will unclog the paint for Howard and Nash to run the PNR. Right now teams can just pack the lane against the Lakers because they are deadly inside and have no credible threats on the wings.

They will win with D'Antoni, just not a championship.

His up tempo offense with the old horses Gasol, Peace, and Kobe should work out about as well as Shaq did in Phoenix. And D'Antoni can't drive a team to play championship quality defense any better than he'll be able to drive to work in LA in less than 20 minutes.

Smith is an expiring contract and they stand to lose him anyway.
