Wrist watches

I'm getting to the point in my life where I need a wrist watch...well, maybe not need, but want one. Why? I have no idea, it just feels like I should own one now since I'm 20 and fumbling in my jeans pocket every 15 minutes for my phone is seeming a bit uncouth.

Now the thing is, I have no idea what brands to go with. I mean sure, go with Taguer, Rolex, etc, but their all a bit...a lot...out of my price range.

So my question is, who wears a watch? What brand? Does it really matter or do all watches work the same (by work I mean, not suck)? What to look for -- avoid -- etc? Am I over thinking this?

Totally depends on what price range you're looking for.

Skagen makes really nice watches of all kinds. They tend to be thinner.

Fossil is a big cheaper and has a larger variety

There always brands like Timex, Citizen, Seiko etc depending on your price range.

First question: What style (sporty, dressy, professional, etc.)

Second question: budget

Timexi ironman line from walmart, $35 covers function over form. Excellent functionality in them, they are not a piece of jewelry.

Casio G-Shock MTG 910. It has atomic sync (for CONUS), solar powered, and it's a G-Shock so it's water and shock proof. Also, the great Tom Cruise wore it in the greatest movie in the history of the universe, Mission Impossible 3. Buy one, you won't regret it. Everyone knows this.

I would get a leather strap one. Lot lighter and less obtrusive compared to metal.

Wrong Skoorb. They are far more than function since my $100 watches have a lot more functionality than the $800 ones....

Dressy/professional. I've never seen a "sporty" type watch that didn't feel like it belonged on a twelve year old boy scout's wrist.

Budget: I'd prefer to spend under $150 but I'd be willing to go up to the $200 area for something worth it. Really, best bang for your buck in the $150-250 range.

One more thing, I dislike gold. It looks tacky on me. I've always preferred silver/platinum/etc.

I didn't read what anyone else said cause I'm just going to say that if you're looking for a lightweight, durable watch go for Skagen. Had it for 4 years and the only issue i've had is that I needed to change the battery.

Very durable and you'll hardly know it's there. http://www.skagen.com/item/233LTTM.fx

I've always preferred metal bands but I've started to like leather ones more and more, I guess either would work.

Face color, uhm, I have no idea. I guess I have no preference.

Isn't that what I said? You can get a piece of jewelry for $2k that tells the time or you can pay $35 that tell the time, has a chrono, timer, multiple alarms. I use chrono, timer, and at least one of the three alarms on a near daily basis If I had a $2k watch it would mostly sit unused in a drawer.

Just an idea of what you can get for not a lot of dough. Hamilton makes some nice pieces. If you want to be a bit snobbish you should go for the mechanical (hand wind) movements they have. They start well in your price range.

i am a big fan of the skagen titanium mesh bands, very nice, easy to adjust, comfortable, I had one and i cracked the crystal somehow, i will say it seems like it was too weak. but i did love that watch very much.

So I owned myself. At any rate, my nice stuff stays away from work so I don't have to worry about bashing it. But, for most any social outing, I wear the nice stuff (relatively speaking, not like I have a drawer full of Rolexs and Omegas).

I'd try to get something with a Sapphire dial window. They are a lot more scratch resistant than the mineral ones, at least in my experience.

I also had a cheap Seiko that I didn't like because it was a mechanical that ran too fast, and you couldn't adjust the time backwards on it. The metal on that watch also scratched too easily.

I currently have this watch and it's held up pretty well over after wearing it every day for about three years.

This one is nice and in a similar style if you like chronographs.

I got a nice Hamilton for under $100 on one of those watch deal sites. I don't like the flashy style of most watches and digital looks pretty tacky, but this watch has sort of a nice, casual look to it. Here's what it looks like: http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-H7045.../dp/B000J179X6 Mine is quartz but it looks exactly the same. It has the sapphire glass front so it's very scratch resistant as well.
