I'd try to get something with a Sapphire dial window. They are a lot more scratch resistant than the mineral ones, at least in my experience.

The WOOT of watches check everyday
Iv bought a couple of Citizen Eco Drives and love them all!
There are so many watch DOD (deal of the day) sites, it's crazy. I'll post the link tomorrow to a site that compiles a list of them for you, if someone doesn't do it before I get to work. I've picked up two watches from that kind of site.

i am a big fan of the skagen titanium mesh bands, very nice, easy to adjust, comfortable, I had one and i cracked the crystal somehow, i will say it seems like it was too weak. but i did love that watch very much.
Here's what I recommend you look for:
1. Metal band - much more durable than cloth/leather, smells less, easier to put on, looks nicer on many watches
2. Sapphire crystal - scratches suck, you won't scratch a sapphire crystal
3. Perpetual calendar - as someone who is not accustomed to watch handling, you will quickly realize how much of a pain it is to change the date every other month
Combine those three characteristics and you get a watch that you can quickly put on, won't look like crap in a few months, and you won't have to adjust but twice a year (DST). I suggest you look for Citizen or Seiko. They exist and will be the most reasonably priced though may be slightly above your price range if you insist on buying new.
Pro tip: Don't ever buy quality watches new.
I like Skagen watches as well. Wearing a Skagen 233LTMN right now. Very minimal watch. And the face of the watch is really nice too.
