I spent $99 on a Fossil watch about 5 years ago and have actually gotten a lot of compliments on it.

I'd try to get something with a Sapphire dial window. They are a lot more scratch resistant than the mineral ones, at least in my experience.

...

I have a Tissot and love the Sapphire face, 6 years later and not a single scratch. The stainless band is a little worse for wear but at least the watch looks great...

If you want simple I really like the Tissot PR100 line. If you want functional the Tissot T-touch is quite nice (compass, altimeter, stopwatch, etc...) but it can be pricey, I think $400+ range so probably not an option.

When I'm not wearing my Tissot I have my trust Casio on that has been going strong now for 8 years. Works great when I want something on that I don't really care about but is quite functional.

Here's what I recommend you look for:

1. Metal band - much more durable than cloth/leather, smells less, easier to put on, looks nicer on many watches
2. Sapphire crystal - scratches suck, you won't scratch a sapphire crystal
3. Perpetual calendar - as someone who is not accustomed to watch handling, you will quickly realize how much of a pain it is to change the date every other month

Combine those three characteristics and you get a watch that you can quickly put on, won't look like crap in a few months, and you won't have to adjust but twice a year (DST). I suggest you look for Citizen or Seiko. They exist and will be the most reasonably priced though may be slightly above your price range if you insist on buying new.

Pro tip: Don't ever buy quality watches new.

I love my seiko coutura chrono. If you can find a sears store that still has seikos in stock they run 50% off very often since we're discontinuing them. I got my coutura (a $425 MSRP) for about 150 out the door. Kinetics run about 425 before discounts too. Just ask your local sears jewler when they will be running the promotion next and what they have left.

In a way, finding a low end watch is difficult because there are so many to choose from. I would take a look at researching basic watch features and designs and decide what you want in a watch. Use these criteria to help narrow down your options. Stuff like what kind of bracelet you want, is it a chronograph, sport/casual/dress, color, skeleton, etc.

The WOOT of watches check everyday
Iv bought a couple of Citizen Eco Drives and love them all!

There are so many watch DOD (deal of the day) sites, it's crazy. I'll post the link tomorrow to a site that compiles a list of them for you, if someone doesn't do it before I get to work. I've picked up two watches from that kind of site.

I agree but I like this site because of their return policy as well as customer service... i cant recommend another site without using them before

i am a big fan of the skagen titanium mesh bands, very nice, easy to adjust, comfortable, I had one and i cracked the crystal somehow, i will say it seems like it was too weak. but i did love that watch very much.

I like Skagen watches as well. Wearing a Skagen 233LTMN right now. Very minimal watch. And the face of the watch is really nice too.

I hate wristwatches. That stupid suntan line and whatnot. I much prefer using my phone, and before I had a cell phone I carried a pocket watch.

this right here is some good advice. also, i'm very happy with the skagen i've had for several years now. in fact, today i'm buying batteries for my skagen and guess, but not my citizen eco-drive

recently just got a sinn 356 and loved it. it's understated but has a good look that people really do notice it. got a croc strap and deployment clasp to go with it for dress.

There are times when I think I'd like a nice watch but when I buy watches I end up wearing them for a few days, maybe even a few weeks and then I just stop wearing them. For the most part I just don't like jewelry hanging from my neck, wrist, or fingers. I don't even wear my wedding ring anymore.

I've got a basic Swiss Army watch. I've had it for maybe 8 years now and it's still running great. I've never been a fan of the metal bands, but this means that I've had something like 4 or 5 bands on this watch over the time I've had it.

The face doesn't have scratches, but the metal is worn down to brass pretty much everywhere.

I'm a fan.

I love my Citizen Eco-Drive. Very good quality and a very nice feel to it. I think my wife spent $200 on it.

Edit: I also have an $85 Fossil watch, which I thought was nice until I got the Citizen. It now feels like a Walmart watch in comparison.

Fossil watches are OK if you want to spend less than $100. They have some good styles, and some good functionality.

I've had my Fossil for 3-4 years now. It's starting to show it's age (I wear it everyday) with scratches on the band and a few scuffs on the watch face, but it still works great. That said, my next watch will probably be an eco-drive.
