I recently ordered a cpu (an XP 1700), but when I boot it says it's a K7 1.1. I've also used 2 diagnostic tools and it still says 1.1. Did I get ripped off or is there a setting somewhere in the BIOS or otherwise that Ican change??

Which motherboard is being used? Yes there should be settings in the BIOS to correct this. Did you just drop the cpu in and boot? My XP 1600+ was indicated as a 1ghz(should have been 1.4ghz) cpu when I did that........ Changed BIOS settings to show correct cpu and voila..... Most likley the fsb reading isnt right, its at 100mhz instead of 133........

Just taking a wild guess here, but I am guessing that either in the bios or on you rmotherboard is a place that it is wired to use 100Mhz FSB speed, giving you 11*100 = 1.1Ghz. With no mention of your motherboard model, hard to tell which is the culprit. You may also have to upgrade the motherboards bios for it to spit out the 1700+ you are looking for. Since The XP processors do not actually Mhz wise as fast as their XP rating is.

But look for somethign in your bios or motherboard manual that allows you to switch the FSB speed from 100 to 133.

Well it sounds like the fsb is set to 100 not 133 as it should be...no xp's are fsb 100 so it wont be the chips fault or wrong chip...

The normal 1700xp is 11x multipler x 133 fsb = 1466mhz

But you have the multiplier right at 11x but x 100fsb = 1100mhz...

Check bios settings or jumpers on the board to set it to 133mhz fsb, for cpu not just memory...

Yup, it's the fsb being set at 100. Switch it to 133 and if problems persist, make sure to flash latest BIOS.

OK I fixed it. The FSb was of course at 100, and is now at 133. The thing is, my motherboard has jumpers that control the cpu fsb. I looked in the bios at first, but there was only ram speed. This being my first computer to build, I was a little confused. Thanks guys.
