Why are there so many video problems affecting only XP? I thought win2k and XP are basically the same, but yet win2k never have these problems...

BTW I installed DX8.1 on win2k and so far I dont have any problems...

That used to happens to me with 3dmark2001 and Morrowind. I installed the Via 4in1 drivers, and it fixed the problem. I'm not sure if it's related, but it used to happen with my T-bird and MS default drivers.

I have 2 systems running XP/AMD combos and have never had a game crash. I'm sure I'm not alone. How many people here are having unexplained problems the article talks about?

Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, I did have trouble with RTCW and Q3, but an uninstall / re-install fixed it.

ya, if you read the article quickly it seems there's something wrong with AMD, but "This occurs because of a code error in the AMD-specific optimized code" means THEIR code, as in Microsoft.

Win 2K does not come with 8.1 on the CD, only XP does. I dont know if Win2K SP2 updates it?

XP SP1 is supposed to have loop fix, maybe d3d8.dll is it.

Well, DirectX 8.1b (note the 'b' revision), is already out, for Win9x and W2K/XP.
