So I'm wondering how's about that router.
It seems kinda old, but probbably still good.

Now I have a question, if anyone know what's max speed that can be used with wireless connection with that router.
And I saw it only support G and not N as other routers ....

What do you think about buying that kind of router at those times.

I have connection speed 20/2 MB, so my acctual download speed is around 2MB/s. Can this router handle it ?

DD-WRT is the reason to buy a WRT54G. I have three running as wireless bridges, five as a Freifunk mesh network, one as a web server that lets me access the configuration pages of everything on the network, three as APs, and two as a VPN server / client pair. if I tried to do this with any other equipment it would cost ten times as much.

get WRTs if you want to experiment with network gear, and something newer if you just want speed.

The WRT54GL will OK for your specific Internet purposes.

If it was the USA I would say do not buy there are much better deals for less money.

May be you can post a link showing prices of models where you buy in Slovenia (or elsewhere in Europe), then you might get a better answer

Except for all the other routers that cost less, have SoCs more than twice as fast, offer N either at 2.4 or dual-band, do gigabit, and -- oh yeah -- also run DD-WRT.

This thing is stone-age now. No one should buy one.

As for Slovenia, you can get the Asus N12 rev C1 for a reasonable price. No gigabit, but it does have N and you can flash it to DD-WRT or Tomato. I suggest Tomato. There's a nice step-by-step guide to flashing here.

I think with dd-wrt the version with more ram was the best router I ever had. I think I had for 7+ years and never had to reboot it. I still keep it as a backup. If it did n speeds I'd still use it.

Slap Tomato on there (bah to all of these DD-WRT fanboys! ) and let it happen. I used two of these for many, many years with Tomato installed. Not sure that you can actually get full throughput at 802.11g speeds through, because of the wireless overhead. It should, however handle the wired ports with ease.

Great router with a third party firmware on it. I still have one as a backup.

I have owned a WRT54GL for over six years with DD-WRT installed and it performs very well. For your network speed it will work except you won't have gigabit speed for network transfers.

Okay this may come off as a rather dumb question but I have this router, an airport extreme (i believe its between the 3rd-5th generation), d-link dir-655, and an airport express. I live in a three story house (if you count the basement). I mainly stay in the basement. My question is which should I use to get the best range and performance? I have comcast with 30mbps.

My current setup is the wrt54gl with tomato installed, with the airport extreme as an access point...should i change it?

any help would be much appreciated. thanks

Shoot...I have a WRT54GL setup running an OpenVPN connection to another (well, the T-Mobile version, which actually has double the flash/ram). No problems, have a dozen devices here. Nothing faster than G though, and only 4 wireless devices (and a couple gig switches).

Tomato FTW
