WTB hdd ADAPTOR

My friend was told to smash his dead hdd,he did not take off
the converter that inturn let's the hdd hook up.(not regular adaptor) the one before the reg. one

What kind of adapter does he need? I doubt there was any sort of adapter on it. Its just a matter of finding the correct replacment drive for the unit. Its just a typical laptop IDE drive. like one of these.

i have tried several hdd's ,no go!i don't even know what to look for.
