it's not about FPS, it's about frame pacing, getting a smooth output comparable to SLI, like with the driver they sent to the media back in April.

http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphi...-Improves-CrossFire-Prototype-Driver/Crysis-3

You have used this driver and know?

It could be that this driver finally gives the memory controller rewrite that they have talked about for so long and does boost performance. The way this driver release has been hyped and anticipated I could see that being the case.

that's the tweet announcing the new driver

"@AMDRadeon

Big news for CrossFire! We plan to release our driver that delivers improved multi-GPU frame pacing on July 31. More info soon."

that + the "prototype driver" from April gives me a pretty good idea about what to expect...

Is it possible that the frame pacing improvements are achieved THROUGH a memory controller re-write?

I don't see any relation, and I think they would have chosen different words if they were implementing a "memory controller re-write" with this version!?

welp, that settles it for me. to hell with amd. i'm utterly sick and tired of their bullshit. no new real drivers (not that optimized windows 8 crap) for over two months, and now this horse crap? wtf. i will definitely be going nvidia next year, that's for sure.
It's ok to cry.

from the amd facebook page in response to a question about when they're going to be available:

"We decided to make some last minute tweaks to the driver, look for it later this week"

I can't take it anymore! It's just not worth living if these drivers aren't being released today. :'(

I don't see why everyone's poking fun at monster88 for showing his anger towards AMD for being let down.. His outburst was likely the culmination of several frustrating events, and not just this particular one.

We all have our limits after all..

Question about the memory controller rewrite: Is it possible that it could allow for higher memory OCing on current cards?

Doubt it. I think it's more to get the cards to use the memory more efficiently which should in theory increase performance. No idea how much though, could be a little, could be a lot.

It's not a memory controller rewrite its a garbage collection rewrite. Its highly u likely to have anything to do with the hardware, it's more likely a pure driver issue. All it does is introduce periodic problems into the frame rate.

This driver doesn't presumably include it and AMD hasn't mentioned it again since telling tech report about it. I don't think they are doing it, because it was promised within 3 months in January. The silence on the issue since does suggest they have stopped working on it, likely sue to the tracking down of the far more serious frame pacing issue.

PS I understand the anger. I bought 2x7970s back in Jan 2012 and abandoned them 6 months later after getting fed up with AMDs failure to acknowledge this and other problems. 1.5 years to finally fix this problem is disgraceful, I know I reported the symptoms of it back in Feb 2012 directly to AMD.

It takes time for whql, so they release it as a beta. Its been this way since they stopped the monthly releases. No big deal.

Ah, ok. I just thought there was a huge difference between non-WHQL and a beta, but apparently AMD has different approach.

This is why I don't buy AMD cards. Just now coming out with a supposed fix for a flaw their cards have had for a long time (years, is it now?), and they still can't get it out on the time table they set. I had really hoped that AMD didn't buy ATI just to drag them down, but it is looking that way from where I sit.

Warning issued for inflammatory language.

WHQL is just a ton of extensive certification testing, usually there aren't any actual changes between the last beta and the WHQL driver.

I too refuse to buy products due to day-long waits.

Nobody really knew about the flaw until FCAT came out, then it wasn't clear if people actually cared, then they started development on the driver. AMD never has had the tools to analyze frame pacing, until Nvidia developed (or rather released publicly) FCAT there was never a way to analyze frametime and actually get a good picture of what was going on.

I will be willing to bet money that 90% of the gamers out there will not see a single visual difference. There are some that may, but the vast majority will not.

This is just to appease review sites that now use FCAT in all their reviews.

Since I haven't had any AMD hardware in a few years, I am curious as to your take on this. Do you think it will appease the FCAT scores alone, or do you think it will actually make the issue less noticeable?

I rocked xfire 7970's for a week six months back and the experience was terrible compared to my previous sli system. Games stuttered like crazy and overall it was so frustrating that I threw the 2nd 7970 into a different box since the and cards work great in single GPS configs.

I'm very hopeful for these drivers.

I'm not flaming or trying to bash, my two main rigs are using AMD GPUs, but why does everyone rush to defend AMD? Are they paying you guys? I understand other folks frustrations, I had CFX 7970's and yes they were fast, and maybe I am one of the 10% who noticed the terrible microstutter, but I bought the cards a year ago, and suffered for 4 months with problems, its not the one day that matters , its the ass pain that has been crossfire for over a year. I do enjoy my 7950, its a great card, but come on guys , you know this is a pile of bolony that AMD has fed you for a year if you are a crossfire user.

A flaw their cards have supposedly had in which NOBODY even noticed or cared until just recently, you mean?

they still can't get it out on the time table they set

Maybe AMD wants to take the time to make sure they don't release a driver that kills video cards, like what that other GPU manufacturer did.

Warning issued for thread crapping.
