WTF ATI?

In the past i normally use Nvidia for all my home gear and for work I dont have a choice and we use ATI. I have been trying to build a windows media center to convert my DVD's to AVI's and play them off of my XBOX and XBOX360. So I get a ATI 9250 PCI card because I am using an older Proliant server. I install the card but cant get the drivers to load. I first try the CD that came with the card and everytime I tried to install the drivers the machine would lock up. So i go to ATI's website and download their drivers (6.8) for Media Center and then try and load it up, but it says the card is not supported - WTF ATI? So I look at list of unsupported cards and the 9250 is on that list. I end up trying 5.3 for Media Center and I get the same message, again WTF ATI? I went back to previous version and they still wont load. I end up just using the Windows driver for that Radeon driver but that was a waste of time, the media files would not play and Media Center would give me an error every time it started up.
I ripped that stupid ATI card out of the server and went back to the store and swapped it with a Nvidia FX5200 PCI card. I installed it into the server and downloaded the LATEST version of NVIDIA's drivers and now everything works. I no longer get any errors and I am able to stream files to my XBOX and XBOX360 (using additional software of course) but I could not do this with an ATI card. I love NVIDIA and the fact that even if the card is old the newest drivers work and I dont have to spend hours and hours trying to find an old version that doesnt even work with a card that it is supposed to support.

WTF ATI? Thanks for wasting my time, i guess there was a reason why your cards are on sale...

6.8 don't support the 9250. Look at the release notes for the drivers. I don't know why you had so much complication. I had to get that exact same card recently to throw into another computer and had the 6.8's working on it by accident. After a while I found out that the 6.5's still supported that card as well. Pretty easy to find on their website if you ask me.

OP if you want actual help with your problem or answers to your question civility might help, your post reads like nVidia fanboy flamebait and labeling those who respond "ATI luvers" doesn't help your case. If you aren't civil don't expect anyone else to be either.

As for your question, why doesn't ATI support older video cards? It is probably easier to write drivers if you aren't trying to support video cards that are 3+ years old, so ATI slowly phases out support for older video cards. It makes perfect sense to me.

Oh and tuteja that "test" is great.

WTF bond007taz? The point of your OP was what again? You told us a story about how you failed to find the proper drivers for an ATI card and your problem was resolved by going with an Nvidia card? How is that useful for discussion? You fixed your own problem just fine by the sounds of it and it needs our attention because.....?

I know exactly what you mean though. I tried installing these drivers I saw laying around on my DFI Expert nF4 because they said DFI on them. They weren't the proper drivers for the nF4 chipset though, I don't know what DFI was thinking...they must be stupid.

Well, I like both companies, but I also had a hell of a time getting an old ATI card to work. It was an ATI Rage 128 (xpert 2000). I downloaded the correct drivers, but the installation kept failing, saying the driver wasn't meant for my hardware. I downloaded several versions of the driver from various sites. In the end, I had to:

1) alt-tab out of the installation when the error message popped up
2) Copy the installation's temporary files to a new location (these files were otherwise deleted by the instalaltion)
3) Manually update the VGA driver, pointing to the folder where I copied the drivers.

Now everything is fine, but it was a huge pain in the ass.

For my ATI card, I had to install it them in VGA Mode (from the Windows boot menu) or else my computer would restart. Though I think that was somewhat chipset or mobo related.

So try safe mode and vga mode to install your drivers.
