multiply 20 bags so far by .05 and you owe me one dollar (canadian). at a 25% exchange rate, I'll go ahead and accept your .75 cents.

So, buy some decent quality bags and reuse them. Whaaaa, I have to pay for bags that used to be free...whaaaaa.

its the hypocrisy in the whole matter. garbage collectors are going on strike and guess what the contingency plan is? the city is asking residents to DOUBLE BAG their garbage. what a load of crap

Give them to some Kid, they'll appreciate the $.

When I lived up North the neighbor kids came to me every couple weeks for bottles/cans. I told them they could have them all. Made them happy, cost me one less trash bag, everybody wins.

Every now and then I've seen hobos going through the dumpster at my apartment looking for cans. If I see them out there I'll grab whatever cans I've got in the apartment and give it to them. At least I know he's out there trying to do something to get some money rather than sitting around begging for it.

Exactly! Can't fault someone for making an honest (and a kind of hard) living.

When I was 11ish, I had some friends convince me to go Door-to-Door asking people for their Bottles/Cans. We made some pretty good $ doing it, but now I look back at that and just shake my head about it.

Then bring your own goddamn bag

Why should I have the extra expense and hassle? So the company can save .1¢ per bag?

Fuck that.

Edit: I forgot, the company also gets to boast about how "green" they are.

no douchebag so you don't waste the fucking bag

Stop thinking about "ZOMG what a hassle, I'm bringing my own bag" and instead think "that's 1 less plastic bag I have to throw away"

No, it's "Now I have to buy bags to use for cat litter, bathroom trash can, trash can under the sink, trash bags for cleaning out the car, trash bags for cleaning out the gutters, trash bags to suffocate hookers with, trash bags for emptying the vacuum cleaner..."

Yes, because EVERYBODY always resuses plastic bags. Plastic bags still consume resources to manufacture and still take up space in landfills and can be a legimate litter problem.

They are going to start doing this in Hong Kong starting next month.

Who cares? Is there some global shortage of landfill space that I don't know about?

Stores around here give you a credit ($0.03 or $0.05, I forget) if you bring your own reusable bags..none of this charging extra BS. Then again, they're probably way more expensive to begin with.

So by charging a punitive nickel for a plastic bag, that will address all of these issues? Do you have a unicorn I can ride, too?

If it causes people to stop using them, and it appears it does, then Yes.

So they no longer offer bags in these stores?

Still offer, but less used means less wasted. This isn't Rocket Science.

It's more a symbolic gesture than anything...5 cents per bag is not much of a deterrent. Start charging $1 per bag, and watch people adopt the reusable bags.

I have been buying all my groceries in reusable bags for years now. If I happen to go to a store (clothes, etc.) and not have a reusable bag on me, then I will get a plastic bag.

I only have a few plastic bags at home, which I use to transport sweaty gym clothes back home and to collect smaller plastic bags (bread bags, etc). Whenever I take empty bottles and cans to the recycling depot, I also take along a bunch of plastic bags for recycling.

As for garbage, I use biodegradable bags. I know I pay more for them, but it's worthwhile to me.

I wouldn't waste the money on these tbh. Unless you expect some to get away from you and end up out of ground somewhere, they aren't going to biodegrade. One of the last jobs I was on was the site of an old landfill. People were digging newspapers up from the 40s, and they were still readable.

I think nakedfrog has a valid point because I reuse those plastic bags around the house whenever I can for trash bags BUT I only reuse a small percentage of those plastic bags. On an average trip to grocery store I'd say get anywhere from 5-10 and I go to the grocery store 3-4 times a month, that's 15-40 bags a month and I may reuse maybe 3-5 of those bags as garbage bags per month. Plus these are just bags from grocery stores, I'm not counting all the other plastic bags I get from other types of stores. I think in an average month I probably take in at least 40-50 plastic bags. So out of 40-50 bags a month I reuse 3-5. So from my experience I don't think saying plastic bags from stores has a net zero affect on landfills because those plastic bags would replace bag a you would otherwise buy. If I had a reusable bag I would probably only throw away 5 bags a month instead of 50.

I just wanted to add because of this thread I'm going to purchase a reusable bag, I've never really sat down and thought about how many of those damn bags I use in a month and to think if I could personally cut the use of 50 bags a month, 600 bags a year

BTW, San Francisco already baned plastic bags from grocery stores
