WTF...Car insurance says I gotta pay 50.00 a day?

Ok, so I got a new car about a month ago, and they gave me temporary insurance for month. I completely forgot, and today I get a call from this insurance agent telling me that if I don't get new insurance, or renew my service with them, they will charge me fifty dollars every day I don't have insurance. Can they do this?

Did you read the contract you agreed to when you started your 'temp insurance'?

There must be some contract with them, that doesn't expire until you say so? Your options are (a)get new insurance through someone else, cancel your old insurance or (b)drive illegally (sans insurance) until you get new insurance.

But as long as you cancel their service, they can't charge you.
 

Sure the company who carries your temporary policy can charge you $50 a day.

The first thing I do when I get a new car (which I just did as a matter of fact) is worry about getting it covered. How can you forget something like that?

I thought i still had another week to get it.. Anyways, since i financed my car, it was in the agreement with the finance company which makes sense.

Yeah, they are saying that unless you actually get a policy, whether it be with them or someone else, they will charge you $50 a day to be on the temporary plan still. Not that hard to understand, really.

Set up your insurance Friday (or tonight if you plan on going with a 24 hour agency, they may not have shut down for the holiday yet), then call them and tell them you no longer need their services and that you have insured the car with another company. You'll be fine.
