WTF? Coffee Intolerance?

I don't usually drink coffee - about once every 2-3 months. Yesterday evening.. I tried Starbucks's Pumpkin Spice Latte(part of their fall offering).. and I am going through hell right now. I haven't had much sleep as I was constantly going to the bathroom the whole night.. and it was extremely painful too.

It seems to get progressively worse as I get older... I never had problems 2 years back. It's even worse when I drink on an empty stomach.

I am pretty sure it is due to coffee because I don't have lactose intolerance at all. Dairy constitutes major part of my diet.. I feel bloated if I have too much milk.. but that is all.

Any one have any similar experience? Or an explanation?

Probably from the pound of sugar in that bullshit. Try a regular black coffee and see if your body reacts to it.

I don't drink coffee anymore. Was causing me major heartburn and indigestion. Something it is known to do.

This and don't drink coffee (or caffeine in general) at night if you're not used to it

That's what I'd suggest. There's flavor, and everything else added in that stuff. I love coffee. I've been drinking lots since I was in my early double digits.

It happens. Especially on an empty stomach.

I can't drink coffee as fast as I used to be able to. But you can pull my caffeine from my cold, dead hands. Just learn to listen to your body.

Mmmmmm pumpkin spice latte.. I know where I'm going at lunch.

The body's reaction to any food is always more intense when digested in an empty stomach because then it gets digested faster. In coffee's case, it can have laxative effects, read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_effects_of_coffee#Laxative.2Fdiuretic

Also, as far as I know, allergy (= hypersensitive immune system) towards any food can arise seemingly spontaneously at almost any age. In this case there's a small chance you could be allergic to caffeine. Try taking a caffeine pill and see if it causes the same symptoms as coffee itself.

Because I am one.. and he is too.

In that case, you sure you don't have lactose intolerance?
If I recall correctly, asians are highly susceptible to it, including indians.

But that doesn't mean everyone has the same symptoms though, might differ from person to person.

Advising him to take a caffeine pill is a terrible idea. Maybe 1/4 of one, but in my experience caffeine pills are much harder on your stomach than just plain coffee.

^ Yeah just meant taking caffeine in pure form to determine if it's caffeine or something else in that cup of coffee causing this. But even better would be decaffeinated coffee.

You should reconsider whether or not you're lactose intolerant. It might not even be lactose, it could be caseine.

Try having a small cup of coffee, black, NOTHING in it. See what happens. If you end up with the same reaction, then you know you need to avoid coffee. You might also want to see a doctor to have your gall bladder checked, because the coffee itself might not be hurting you, but the sudden stimulation of bile release that is hurting. So in other words, this could actually be a serious problem and this is a hint to get it looked at.

Pumpkin spice latte? Barely even coffee. Some much extra shit in those drinks it'll be tough to narrow it down.

How do I know if I am intolerant or not? I never had such issues before... and I have been drinking milk and eating dairy products my whole life, it happens only if I drink something that has coffee in it. I am not saying it is impossible.. but how can I tell that I am intolerant.

Agreed.. I think I'll give it a try this weekend and update this thread. Probably visit a doctor once I make sure that it is not coffee that is causing me this discomfort.

Starbucks's Pumpkin Spice Latte

Here's what the problems are.

1. That's not coffee, that's a sugar drink with a little espresso in it.
2. Charbucks isn't really all that.

That being said, coffee can still upset a stomach, because it does act like a mild laxative. 1 cup only of black coffee every morning for me gives me the energy I crave (without going overboard), and helps keep me regular.

Shouldn't have called the poor kid working at Starbucks bad names. See what that gets you?

Actually my wife has this problem. Coffee is VERY acidic. As you get older, your esophagus lining gets worn away and you're more susceptible to acidic foods/drinks.

Tagamet helps, and the generic is cheap.
