Family baby and evil genius Stewie Griffin caught a younger version of himself at the mall purchasing a toy, after having traveled to present day via time machine. Current Stewie stole the time machine and — voila — the dog is saved.

Stewie runs into his past self who travelled forward to buy a toy. That Stewie has a working return pad (time machine), which the modern day Stewie steals, and travels to save Brian before he gets hit by the car.

Funny because I actually remember that travel-forward scene in a previous episode and just thought it was funny.

Stewie goes to the future Christmas shopping for an item that was a hot toy, then goes back to the present. Brian dies. Months after despondent Stewie and Vinny go Christmas shopping a the Quahog Mall.
Stewie remembers that this is the day he goes shopping (from the past). He borrows the time return pad and goes back in time, not before saying goodbye to Vinny who he may never meet. Gets back just
in time to push Brian away from the speeding car. After he explains what happened, Brian sees future Stewie disappear. Christmas time Brian thanks clueless Stewie.

I thought maybe the future Stewie that goes back in time for Christmas would have something to do with it. But I said to myself, 'why didn't future Stewie know about Brian's death?' I guess he didn't know and was just shopping for the Jolly Farm game or whatever that was.
