So far as money is concerned:

Fuck haiti.

We give hundreds of billions to countries all over the world, most of whom actively oppose us. Meanwhile our education system has gone from number 1 to number 147, helping to set up other, less "advanced" societies as the worlds leaders.

If by "I don't care" people mean that they can't do anything about the situation, I understand. If instead people literally mean that they don't care about the suffereing of others, I find that statment very callous.

Haitians are starting to shoot people over the food donations and rioting over why "no one is here to help us"

Haiti... keepin' it classy

I don't give a shit. Well I give a shit in a sense that I chided most of the people who all of a sudden pretend to give a shit.

They're dirt poor, in one of the most desperate situations a person could possibly be in, and they're watching people croak left and right and know they might be next. Add to that they're not exactly the smartest or most industrious group of people on the planet, and what'd you expect would happen?

There was shooting and looting after Katrina too, and that situation wasn't nearly as catastrophic as this was. People don't react rationally when they get really desperate.

The problem is no one in Haiti can really afford guns..

No, but I think I'm going to donate some money to help them, probably the Red Cross.

I'm sure there's plenty on here that don't care about others suffering. Pretty pathetic really, but that's the way it is.

WTF? You bleeding hearts expect everyone to care about the people in EVERY disaster?
After a while, "disaster burn-out" sets in as we become innundated by disaster after disaster.

MOST of these kinds of "massive" disasters happen in corrupt 3rd world shitholes; Indian Ocean nations, China, Iran, etc.
MOST of the time, in countries that COULD afford to build better buildings...but don't...or are compromised by corrupt contractors and building inspectors.

There's nothing wrong with "feeling bad for the people affected," without actually "caring" enough to "do something" or donate.

Sooo that justifies it somehow?

I guess I feel bad for Americans who happened to be there, and by bad I mean glad that I am not them. Which I never would be, because I would never go to a fucking shithole like Haiti to tell them Jesus saved my life. So nevermind, I feel bad for no one. Except for myself for having Jeopardy bumped by pointlessly extended news programs.

"Yeah Brian it's a clusterfuck down here, uhhh no power, people are dead we are guessing between 1 and 6billion casualties. Haitians are poor, they do not have food or water. They did not have food or water before the earthquake, but they don't now either"

There is no way to verify the money get's spent the right way. Fuck no I didn't donate. How much of that money ends up being skimmed off by the corruption?

Damn this is going to sound rude and probably needs to be in P&N but oh well. What has Haiti or other countries done for us? We step in countless times to help other nations out and we receive some gratitude but when shit goes wrong it's always the U.S. fault. Fuck that. Time for other governments to step up and help their countries out. We have enough shit wrong in the U.S.

Normally I'm a very giving person but my money goes to charities within the U.S.

Did you even read what I replied to? A comment was made that seemed like the poster was somehow surprised by the fact that it's devolved into looting and chaos, which is just unbelievably naive. My point was that New Orleans turned into a third world shitole with dangerous nutjobs shooting at people, and that's in a disaster that was nowhere near as severe with a group of people a few steps up on the civilization ladder to begin with.

My point was never that it's somehow acceptable or excusable, my point was that it simply happens. People fucking suck. When there's a disaster of that scale, social order breaks down and people do whatever the fuck they think is going to help them survive, whether it makes any sense or not. It's not just in Haiti.

Nothing yet but I had a party on the weekend and I'm giving the $$ from the empties to Haiti. It's the least I can do. I heard the Canadian gov't is matching donations so I plan on looking into that as well.

We are already in the top 3 spending per pupil (secondary) in the US, exactly how much more money do you think needs to be tossed in to actually get the results you want? Perhaps the problems with education in the US have little or nothing to do with the amount of money being spent on it.
